Cheney and Obama are 8th Cousins

Lynn Cheney told NBC's Norah O'Donnell today that Dick Cheney's geneology shows he and Barack Obama are 8th cousins, related through a relative from France in the 1700's.

Why was she telling this? She was "admitting" it to acknowledge any perceived bias on her part against Hillary.

That said, I think she's just trying to knock Obama down a bit with Dems via association.

One does not compromise with Straussians, neocons, chickenhawks or clueless bastards.  People who still support George W. Bush, torture and war profiteering at this late stage of human history are beyond reason or persuasion.  There is no point whatsoever in worrying about how such people see things, what they might say, or how they might characterize our actions or arguments.  These people should not be appeased or wooed, they should be marginalized and driven back under the rocks from which they have slithered.
Or is there someone here who would condemn this?

I once traced out that sort of thing for myself, looking for relationships to presidents specifically. Including relationships by marriage, I came up with U. S. Grant. To this faint connection I attribute my fondness for the flavor of whiskey.

I guess that's not the same as finding a relationship to someone alive now, or at least someone not dead.

So far I have been fortunate not to find any relationship to Franklin Pierce.

Homo erectus dispersed from Africa across Asia between 1 and 2 million years ago, we all have "African" blood.

Skipping that basic point, mixed ancestry is not confined to the South, though clearly the South had more than its fair share of dumb laws regarding race and racial classification.

    Race is a fiction.
Finally in 1924, the Virginia Racial Purity Act defines Black persons as having any trace of African ancestry - the infamous "one-drop" rule. Practically speaking, most people cannot prove their ancestry and the rule is applied inconsistently. Other states also define Blackness differently. As historian James Horton notes, one could cross a state line and literally, legally change race.

Hope that you didn't have some illusion that you belonged to a white race.

Hell, never mind "white" Americans, let's make it easier for you.

I'd even be happy with something you dig up that supports the contention that most Americans - regardless of "race" - have blood from african slaves in their heritage.

Will have to do your own work on this, because, as I have shown having one-drop of Black blood put an American in a lower caste with significantly less rights. All who could pass did and are now considered white.
A creole friend of mine from NOLA has relatives who refuse to acknowledge any relation to her because they are "white". We are talking first cousins.

So bottom line, since you acknowledge that there is no such thing as race, there is no way to prove that most Americans have African Slave blood.  There is no test. But if you are interested you can start to do some research and you will be able to deduct that most American families have African American blood.

Here is a site that is a good start.

Nor is there any support for your original claim that:
most "white" americans have blood from african slaves [...] mixed in with their "whiteness."
unless you are now saying that by your phrase "blood from african slaves" you actually meant "blood from the distant ancestors of african slaves."

Sigh. You wouldn't possibly be that disingenuous, would you?

fwiw, no one, afaik, is arguing with this completely different statement of yours:

Don't be silly. I am clearly refering to decendents of African/American slaves. I have already clarified that point with Molly Bloom.

You are good at math. Take Peaches suggestion and do some math. The longer your family has been in America the more likely you have African Slave relatives. And counting  non "white" population the total number is much greater.

    Jefferson said:

Jefferson promised in his 1809 Indian address.
" Absorption into the white race--a consummation devoutly to be wished from one perspective--was the lure Jefferson tossed before the tribes.

The race of Sally Hemings's and Thomas Jefferson's son, Eston Hemings, was indisputably "black" while he was a slave at Monticello. Years later, living in Ohio in 1850 as a free man, Eston was described by a census taker as "mulatto." A decade later, Eston and his wife had moved to Wisconsin where a census taker listed them as "white."

by Peaches on Wed Oct 17, 2007 at 04:34:43 PM EST
is that most Americans all share a common ancestry with African slaves (whatever we define this as) that is similar to Cheney Obama connnection (8th cousins. Simple math should be, at least, thought provoking - though not proof.

Each of us going back eight generations has

    2 parents
    4 grand parents
    8 great grandparents
    16 great great grandparents
    32 great great great grandparents
64 great great great great grandparents
    128 great great great grandparents
256 great great great great grandparents
512 great great great great great grandparents.

Thats a lot of possibilities for shared ancestors amongst individual family trees. It doesn't take many more generations to encompass all of mankind.

proves nothing, but something to think about.

Many states retained laws that allowed persons to claim remote amounts of Indian blood, but still classify themselves as white.  Similar amounts of black blood would render a person's claim to whiteness as moot.  In Virginia, a statute existed that defined "white" as "one-sixteenth or less of the blood of the American Indian and hav[ing] no other non-Caucasic blood."  This allowance permitted Indian blood to override the doctrine of hypodescent -- its presence alongside European ancestry did not automatically prevent one from being white.
In its accommodation of one-sixteenth Indian blood, the 1924 Racial Integrity Act venerated the "Pocahontas Exception." Acknowledging the interracial marriage of Pocahontas, the famous "Indian Princess" and the Englishman John Rolfe, the Pocahontas Exception ensured that their descendants could be legally white.
