Democratic Debate: Live Thread

Elizabeth Warren got the first question on the economy. Her answer sounded like she's given it a million times.

Amy Klobuchar on student debt. Good speaking voice. Mentions Donald Trump.
Beto O'Rourke: Economy question, shows off his Spanish. Won't commit to a 70% tax rate.

Booker: Role of corporations like Amazon and the economy. Introduces race in his answer.

Back to Warren on the monopolisitic corporations

Julian Castro: women and wages. His mother was single and raised him and his brother. He would pass the Equal Rights Amendment and an equal pay law. [More...]

Gabbard: Touts her accomplishments, turns economy question into one about peace.

Blasio: Talked too fast to hear what he was saying

7:20 pm: Changing to health care. Ask for raise of hand as to who would abolish private insurance for a government program. Only a few raised their hands -- Warren and the guy on the far left among them.

Another question for Warren, she's getting a lot of time. She wants Medicare for All. (I don't -- whatever happened to giving everyone the same coverage as members of Congress?)

Beto: I hate when candidates use a single, specific person none of us know to make a point. Pointless. Tall guy on the left jumps on him. Short bald guy who sounds like mediator jumps in on both.

Gabbard: Makes sense, stop talking about one bill over the other and talk about the objective. She supports Medicare for All.

Booker: Supports Medicare for All, brings up race again. He's really playing for the African-American vote.

Julian Castro: Reproductive justice, not just reproductive freedom. Talks about rights of transgers. Believes in right to have an abortion. Would appoint judges to federal bench who appreciate Roe v. Wade.

Warren: It's not enough to rely on courts to protect the right. Roe v Wade should be made federal law.

Opioid question: Booker would jail the Pharma companies. Beto answered by talking about the incarceration rate especially of drug offenders. Then said he'd hold Pharma accountable.

First commerical: Who's making their presence known? I like Beto and Castro so far -- I'm disappointed that Warren sounds programmed.

Immigration up next. Julian Castro has a good response. Would repeal Section 1325. Cheers. He rolls his "r"s perfectly. Then Booker answers, also shows off some Spanish. Booker seems like he's trying too hard. He doesn't offer a solution, just says current policies should end.

Tall guy on the left blames corporations and the 1% for our immigration problem.

Beto vs Castro: YEA Julian! Beto: Fail. Castro wipes the floor with Beto on Section 1325. Beto wants to help those who are seeking asylum. Castro wants to protect all who cross the border. Klobuchar also falls on her face. She wants to uphold "the law." She turns the question to one about the economy. Guy who is second on the left agrees with Castro -- he's very passionate. Booker talks about our over-criminalization of social problems. He gave a good response.

Female NBC host says she hasn't heard an answer to what they would do on day one about immigration. False, Julian Castro said on day one he'd repeal every immigration order issued by Donald Trump.

7:50 pm: Who is making the biggest splash? In my view: Julian Castro. Klobuchar looks like a goody-two shoes, I'm not responding well to her. Warren has to learn to loosen up connect individually, using ordinary words. Booker is also a little too stiff. Beto doesn't seem spontaneous or able to adapt to sudden shifts in topics. I never heard of Tulsi Gabbard before today and I'm already tired of her touting her accomplishments.

Break time, please feel free to update in comments and give us your impressions.

    Castro eating up Beto (5.00 / 1) (#5)

on immigration.  Beto living up to his reputation by staying stuck on platitudes.

    Booker can't "pass" the ERA... (5.00 / 2) (#10)
by MileHi Hawkeye on Thu Jun 27, 2019 at 01:18:49 AM EST
as President. It is up to the States to ratify the ERA and Congress to extend the now passed deadline for doing so.

Sadly, even after all these years, we still need one more State to ratify.

    I'll let John Oliver explain.

    My take: (5.00 / 1) (#19)
by KeysDan on Thu Jun 27, 2019 at 01:42:17 PM EST
Elizabeth Warren towered over the other nine candidates, eclipsing them in presence, intellect, and, yes, in plans.  Feasible plans, even Medicare For All, if more time was available to explain.

Julian Castro was passionate but measured as evidenced by his reasonable approach to address immigration problems.

Beto, seemed fidgety as if being suppressed by the constraints of the podium.  And, more importantly, unconfident.

Bill de Blasio's purpose seemed to be to influence the Democratic Party platform rather than to champion his own candidacy. But, if it was the latter, he did not succeed.

Amy Klobuchar makes a good senator, as does Corey Booker.  It is like the successful architect who wants to be a great violinist, but really should stick to architecture.

Tim Ryan came across as a lightweight, and maybe, more mean, that passionate.  Delaney is a total reject--he knows how to create jobs because he is a businessman. We need bipartisanship..  I saw this movie and did not like it, maybe OK for Turner Classics, but not a 2020 release.

My only knowledge of Gabbard was her past anti-gay positions.  However, she claims to have changed. Guess, confession and forgiveness are a Christian thing to do, otherwise Jesus would have had a bad weekend for nothing.  There is also penance involved...her's could be to drop out and remain a reconstructed congresswoman, adding a needed voice to peace with Iran.

I have liked Jay Inslee, having the experience of a US congressman and two-term governor. And, of course, his emphasis on climate change.  But, his passion was tinged with anger, making as a presidential candidate, a old guy shagging kids off the lawn. That scenario, I thought, would be for tonight's debate.

Look forward to the second group, tonight.  Hoping that Mayor Pete will answer each question in a different language, starting with the language of Trump's favorite country, Norwegian.

Gabbard for us on LGBTQ rights? Were her past hostile statements really so long ago that they can be attributed to growing up in a "socially conservative family" (itself quite an understatement, as I recall)? Did her military experience really cause her to change her opinions (i.e., a decade ago), or was it (more recent) political expediency?

That Jeralyn had never heard of Tulsi before.   You keep good company.

Honestly I tuned out about halfway through. Generally I thought Castro raised his profile, Beto lowered his, and everyone else was more or less a wash. For the next debate we could kick out everyone but Warren, Castro, Booker, Klobacher, and Inslee, and we'd all be better off for it.

Also poor Delaney, not even the moderators wanted to hear from him.

Wouldn't give a straight answer to the NYTimes about withdrawing troops from Afghanistan.

    Liked Tulsi.
    Liked Amy.

All elected officials, and all candidates vying for public office should be made to ride public transportation daily to and from work as a condition for employment. Without that experience, they can't have a clue about what it is like to be a citizen of the US of A.
