Tuesday Open Thread

I'm tired of reading and writing about the man currently occupying the oval office and his family. Much more pleasant and garnering millions of views per video on Instagram is Nusret Gökçe, aka #SaltBae, the incredibly good-looking, sexy, talented butcher/restaurateur at Nusr Et steakhouses in Turkey, Dubai and now Abu Dhabi. [More...]

This short video clip posted two days ago has had 4.6 million views. This one posted six days ago has had 8 million views. Even Rhianna is now wearing his t-shirt. The photo of her was posted yesterday and has more than 7,000 comments.

TMZ has collected 27 photos of him shirtless.

Most of his clips are less than 30 seconds long. This one which clearly displays his butchering skills this one with beef are still my favorites. This clip makes me the hungriest.

Too bad he was turned down for an HB-1 visa four times while in the U.S. -- we could have had an Nusr ET in the U.S.

This is an open thread, all topics welcome.

Mary Tyler Moore was one of the most versatile talents of her generation. Director Robert Redford tapped her dark side in his searing 1980 drama "Ordinary People," casting her against her own public persona as the emotionally repressed and aloof mother of a suicidal teenager. Her acid portrait of Beth Jarrett, an almost thoroughly unlikeable and ultimately pitiful woman, earned her a well-deserved Academy Award nomination as Best Actress.

In 1996, MTM once against displayed her formidable comedic chops in one of my favorite films of the '90s, the screwball romp "Flirting with Disaster." As Ben Stiller's hopelessly neurotic Jewish mother, she chastises her daughter-in-law (Patricia Arquette) in front of everyone over her decision to go braless while nursing her child. If you've never seen this fun movie, it's definitely worth watching veterans like Ms. Moore, George Segal, Lily Tomlin, Alan Alda and Richard Jenkins very adroitly steal scenes from their younger co-stars.

    MTM will be missed.

    That's our Tulsi. (Eyes roll upward.) (5.00 / 1) (#25)
by Donald from Hawaii on Wed Jan 25, 2017 at 04:59:20 PM EST
    From TPM:

"Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) confirmed in an interview with CNN on Wednesday that she met with Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad during a recent trip to the country. Gabbard told Jake Tapper on CNN's 'The Lead' that she 'hadn't planned' on meeting Assad, but took the 'opportunity' when it came up."

Speaking as Rep. Gabbard's constituent, I am increasingly annoyed by her demonstrable penchant for grandstanding at our expense, and I know I'm not the only one in her district who's feeling this way. Colleagues of mine who traveled to D.C. in part to meet with members of the Hawaii congressional delegation were stood up today by her, when she abruptly cancelled their appointment and blew them off to do this interview with CNN'S Jake Tapper.

I'll be honest, I'm very sorely tempted to form an exploratory committee with the idea of challenging her in the 2018 Democratic primary. She's clearly using this seat to further her own ambitions, rather than serve the people who elected her. And in a state like ours with a small delegation, that's entirely counterproductive to our present needs. If no other Democrat steps up to the plate here, well, I'm inclined to not let her run unopposed.

    Aloha.

"(The Syrians) asked me, 'Why are the United States and its allies supporting these terror groups which are destroying Syria, when it was al Qaeda that attacked the United States on 9/11, not Syria.' I didn't have an answer to them."

and the obviously pro regime talking point
The US government claims it does not fund these groups and only provides assistance to so-called moderate rebels. However, Gabbard said the Syrians she met with told her that there are no moderate rebels in the country.
Either she only spoke to pro-Assad Syrians("all rebels are terrorist") or the only opposition she spoke to considered themselves radical.

    Parent
... politicians who believes that election to public office somehow endows her with the unspoken title of "Smartest Person in the Room." Ms. Gabbard is certainly photogenic and is clearly ambitious personally, and she's obviously nobody's fool.

But her Achilles' Heel is her own myopic and shallow -- and ultimately dismissive -- understanding of responsible public policy development. As such, I'd offer that she shares a rather unfortunate trait with President* Trump, in that both tend to stake out public positions and postures on issues which are calculated more upon immediate political expediency, than founded in any longstanding moral principle.

As an example, twelve years ago Tulsi Gabbard mirrored her father's raging homophobia, and was elected to the state legislature on a platform opposing the so-called "homosexual agenda," specifically marriage equality. Yet when one listens to her today, she says that she favors marriage equality and further talks as though she's been a lifelong civil libertarian. Even granting that one's personal views have the capacity to evolve as one gets older, her rapid political transformation on this matter has been quite startling, if not downright jarring.

Further, Congresswoman Gabbard's continued ties as a practicing Hindu to a Honolulu-based fundamentalist Krishna sect headed by Jagad Guru Siddhaswarupananda Paramahamsa, aka Chris Butler, strongly suggests that her recent metamorphasis on LGBT rights was driven by her personal desire to not be seen politically as being on the losing side of the marriage equality issue, rather than as a result of any sudden spiritual enlightenment on her part.

Because as homophobes go, Chris Butler has long been one of the more nasty, vile and controversial in the greater Honolulu community. And from her childhood, Ms. Gabbard's Hindu identity has been rooted entirely in her professed devotion to this white American Krishna leader, whom many here in the islands consider to be nothing more than a dogmatic religious cultist.

While I personally don't subscribe to that particular point of view about Mr. Butler and his respective devotion to Krishna, I have admittedly long harbored my own very serious concerns and reservations about the uncompromising and intractable nature of religious fundamentalism in general, regardless of one's particular professed faith.

And it's long been a matter of historical record that there exists a deep-seated and often violent animosity between the fundamentalist Hindu and Islamic worlds, one which has long preceded and at times even eclipsed any perceived hostility between Islam and Judeo-Christianity. It's what underscores the bitter rivalry between India and Pakistan. In India alone, where 15% of the population is Muslim, it's been responsible for the loss of untold thousands of lives just in our own respective lifetimes.

And speaking for myself only, I believe that inherent Hindu suspicion of Islam is what likely accounts for Ms. Gabbard's past public statements criticizing the now-former Obama administration's policies confronting ISIS and other Islamic fundamentalist groups in the Middle East.

not imagine Donald's comments in public and private vary one whit, he is nothing but consistent and a rather generic progressive but pragmatic Democrat( nothing wrong with that!).

As to Tulsi the more you look the less there is to like

Tulsi Gabbard is a Bernie supporter and a progressive darling--and yet her stances on standard liberal issues like gun rights and immigration are starting to converge with those of Donald J. Trump. She's a lawmaker who has a soft spot for dictatorial regimes. She pals around with Sheldon Adelson. She's declined to sign onto an assault weapons ban. She opposes admitting refugees. She a frequent fixture on Fox News, where she has slammed the president over his refusal to use the term "Islamic extremism" to refer to terror attacks.
    ...
Gabbard has been a favorite of Fox News, where she diverged from the typical Democratic Party line on the term "Islamic extremism." Democrats such as Bernie Sanders--whom Gabbard endorsed--have stayed away from such phrases because, they argue, it suggests that the United States is at war with the Muslim religion itself.
    ...
In March, Gabbard was the only Democrat and one of just three members of Congress to vote against a resolution condemning violence by the Assad regime against civilian populations.

And I'd lay better than even odds at this point that I know this particular constituency one helluva lot better than she does.

The only reason Tulsi even got elected in the first place back in 2012 is because she wasn't now-former Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann, an intensely disliked bully who's blamed for the fiscal disaster that's the city's current rail transit project, which is presently running nearly $3 billion in the hole.

Facing daunting prospects at the city level should he seek re-election to his old job, Hannemann instead decided he'd run for Congress from the Second Congressional District, which encompasses rural Oahu and the neighbor islands and excludes Oahu's entire south shore where the rail project is mired in controversy.

It didn't matter. He was initially declared the frontrunner against Ms. Gabbard, who was then a Honolulu City Councilmember mostly unknown outside her west Oahu district, but he found that his lousy / nasty reputation quickly preceded him on the neighbor islands. He receive only 34% of the vote in the CD-2 race. Polls afterward showed that the overwhelming reason why people voted for Tulsi was because they flat-out rejected Mufi.

In 2014, Tulsi Gabbard ran for re-election all but unopposed, facing token primary opposition in a housewife who refused to either spend any money or make any effort, and a Republican who -- it turned out -- was homeless and living in his '72 VW van.

Now that people are getting to know Tulsi by watching her in action, they're liking less and less what they're seeing.

And what exactly did Tulsi Gabbard's "secret" trip to Syria accomplish? Well, for starters, everybody is once again talking about what increasingly appears to be our congresswoman's favorite subject - herself.

And because of that, unfortunately, I suspect that her primary objective here was more self-promotion, than actually seeking peace in this war-torn region of the world. Clearly, there is a private agenda that's been driving her public actions over the last 18 months or so.

I do wish Ms. Gabbard would demonstrate as much public concern about the welfare of her own constituents here in Hawaii's Second Congressional District, as she does with the nurturing of her own public image. We're just a small state of 1.4 million residents, with only a four-member congressional delegation. We can ill-afford to have one of them constantly sucking all the oxygen out of the room, as Ms. Gabbard does.

Further, given the increasingly derisive comments I'm hearing about her both here in Hawaii and elsewhere in the country, I've reluctantly cocluded that she's cultivating a personal reputation for being a nakedly ambitious and self-absorbed political dilettante, rather than as a stateswoman and earnest public servant.

And it's really too bad that she can't see how this is ultimately counterproductive to everyone's best interests -- including her own.

Impacts of possible income tax law changes (none / 0) (#1)
by Green26 on Tue Jan 24, 2017 at 05:30:12 AM EST
    and medicaid funding changes.

While Trump and Repubs want to lower the top individual tax rate, most plans seem to also want to reduce, eliminate or cap itemized deductions, or cap overall itemized deductions. This will have a large negative impact on high earners, and likely offset or reduce the positive impact of the reduced rate. It will also impact blue states.

"[One Repub] plan, like Trump's, would sharply reduce tax rates, especially at the top. Additionally, it would eliminate most itemized deductions -- including those for state and local income and property taxes. ... these deductions are most often claimed in relatively high-tax states such as Connecticut, New Jersey, California and New York."

Mortgage interest and charitable donations are also big itemized deductions. There are already some limits in place for higher earners.

Another large change may be Medicaid block grants.

"one other likely alternative -- and one that might appeal to many Republican legislators -- would be pegging the size of a state's lump sum to its per-capita income. The higher-income the state is, the less money it gets."

"[this] would result in a seismic redistribution of federal spending."

"Among the biggest winners would be lower-cost-of-living red states; among the biggest losers, high-cost-of-living blue states. Texas, for example, would gain about $8 billion in federal Medicaid funding relative to what it receives today. New York and California would each lose more than $15 billion annually."

"... some heavily Democratic states have little room to shift funds toward safety-net programs such as Medicaid. That's because they're among the states that most need to raise the share of revenue that they contribute to their government pensions to avoid an increase in their already-large unfunded pension liabilities. .... Among those most in trouble: New Jersey, California and Oregon ...."

an opinion piece not a fact article.

Secondly many of those "blue" people live in swing states and the people who are going to be hurt most are Trump voters.

And if you think states like GA are actually going to use that money on Medicaid you have another thing coming. GA would not even take the free money from the ACA they said because they could not "afford" it. They're not going to be able to afford Medicaid block grants either then.

I have never seen a political party so gleeful at inflicting misery on Americans as the GOP is.

... today with 14 Academy Award nominations including Best Picture, Best Director (Damien Chazelle), Best Actor (Ryan Gosling) and Best Actress (Emma Stone). That ties a record set in 1959 by "Ben Hur."

"Arrival" followed with 8 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director (Denis Villeneuve). Barry Jenkins' luminous coming-of-age drama "Moonlight" also received 8 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director (Jenkins), Best Supporting Actor (Mahershala Ali) and Best Supporting Actress (Naomie Harris).

Meryl Streep picked up her record 20th acting nomination for "Florence Foster Jenkins." Did her awesome speech at the Golden Globes maybe have something to do with that? I think so. Her film was entertaining, but otherwise hardly Oscar-worthy.

Denzel Washington's by-the-book screen adaptation of August Wilson's play "Fences" received nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor (Washington), Best Supporting Actress (Viola Davis) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Wilson). Wilson's nod may be something of a first, perhaps for the "posthumous nomination" category; the playwright passed on eleven years ago at age 60.

And Mel Gibson's surprising return from Hollywood purgatory is almost complete, as he snagged a Best Director nod for his war drama "Hacksaw Ridge," which further picked up 6 nominations in all, including Best Picture and Best Actor (Andrew Garfield).

Loathe Gibson as a man, if you will, for his past anti-Semitic, misogynist and homophobic utterances. But please also recognize, as Academy voters no doubt did here, that he did an outstanding job here as a director. "Hacksaw Ridge" is a very worthy Best Picture nominee.

my local npr station reported this morning that trump's cutting of federal funds to sanctuary cities would likely affect programs such as the police cyber-crime unit and trafficked-persons unit as they are primarily funded by federal grant.

i would assert that seattle's sanctuary city statute promotes better policing and safer communities. without it, victims of crime are left vulnerable and without recourse, crimes would go unreported to police, and police would have a more difficult time solving crime and arresting criminals.

this is a reasonable and prudent statute that, in my opinion, should be adopted by all states not just a few cities. i provide here seattle municipal code 4.13 to debunk the assertion that there is sanctuary for persons commiting felonys or previously deported persons:

That just happens. The real benefit is that you researched and educated yourself, and perhaps some who don't have the time or inclination to post.

Brooklyn federal prosecutors on Friday called for a court inquiry into whether alleged billionaire drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman is entitled to continue receiving legal representation from a pair of public defenders.

Guzman was extradited from Mexico to face charges in Brooklyn last week, and was represented at his arraignment by two taxpayer-funded defense lawyers from the Federal Defenders of New York, Michael Schneider and Michele Gelernt.

Prosecutors also said they were seeking to forfeit $14 billion in proceeds....They also told Cogan that if Guzman doesn't replace his court-appointed lawyers, there could be a conflict of interest problem because the Federal Defenders have represented two potential cooperating witnesses against Guzman and three alleged co-conspirators.

Gelernt and Schneider did not respond to an email seeking comment late Friday.

And yet, amid the division emerged a story suggesting the possibility of unification.

American assets that Putin is attempting to take out for spilling the beans to the CIA about Putin interfering in the election. Dangerous times ahead for anybody who doesn't follow the Putin agenda.
