New Years Musical Hits and Fumbles

I didn't see any of last night's TV performances live, but judging from the videos and news reports, Gloria Estefan and the cast of On Your Feet (a Broadway musical about her and her husband Emilio Estefan) put on a terrific show, while Mariah Carey just imploded.

I especially liked Ektor Rivera's booming voice (see at 3'45" in) and Ana Villafañe, and the child dancers. Gloria still has her powerful voice, and they were obviously not lip-syncing.

So what happened to Mariah Carey? Here's the video. [More...]

Mariah's staff is blaming the show's tech department, but everything was in top working condition for other acts, so I'm not buying it. Here's Mariah's reaction on Twitter afterwards: "Sh*t happens."

I really know nothing about her, as I've never followed her or her music. I have, on occasion, wondered about how's she portrayed in the media. Mariah was in Aspen this week with her two children and a new boyfriend. Via Page Six, here's a photo of her going shopping in an evening gown. Isn't this the same gown she wore last December going to some event in New York? For such a big Diva, I'm surprised she'd wear the same dress in public a year apart.

Anyway, if I were in New York, I'd go see "On Your Feet." It looks really happy. I'm sticking with Happy for 2017, no matter what. Can't wait for James Corden to return from vacation.

Update: Guess who will turn 80 in 2017? Jack Nicholson, Dustin Hoffman, Jane Fonda, Warren Beatty, Vanessa Redgrave, Morgan Freeman, Marlo Thomas and Anthony Hopkins, to name a few.

This thread is open to all things about entertainment and New Years' shows. (i.e., no politics, it's still the holiday.)

over the holiday. Very entertaining if you like old fashioned musicals. Stone and Gosling are so charming you don't mind that they aren't very good singers and dancers. Well, mind very much anyway.

A happy way to start the year. I did not want to see any of the heavier films.
