Rep Cummings: Gowdy altered documents in order to make false allegations against Clinton

Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Maryland), the ranking member of the eGhazi committee,, makes a startling charge against Rep. Trey Gowdy, the Chairman of the eGazi committee:

To further inflate your claim, you placed your own redactions over the name of the individual with the words, “redacted due to sources and methods.” To be clear, these redactions were not made, and these words were not added, by any agency of the federal government responsible for enforcing classification guidelines.

Predictably, commentators began repeating your accusations in even more extreme terms, suggesting in headlines for example that “Clinton Burns CIA Libya Contact.”

Contrary to your claims, the CIA yesterday informed both the Republican and Democratic staffs of the Select Committee that they do not consider the information you highlighted in your letter to be classified. Specifically, the CIA confirmed that “the State Department consulted with the CIA on this production, the CIA reviewed these documents, and the CIA made no redactions to protect classified information.”

Unfortunately, you sent your letter on October 7 without checking first with the CIA. Now that we have done so, we have learned that your accusations were incorrect.

As a result of your actions, the State Department yesterday asked the Select Committee not to reveal the individual’s name publicly, not for classification reasons, but to protect the individual’s privacy and avoid bringing additional undue attention to this person.

Unfortunately, the standard operating procedure of this Select Committee has become to put out information publicly that is inaccurate and out of context in order to attack Secretary Clinton for political reasons. These repeated actions bring discredit on this investigation and undermine the integrity of the Select Committee and the House of Representatives.

This is a big deal imo. Flagrant and obvious lies released for purely political reasons.

If people actually care, this is a violation of ethical and criminal laws - it is the express use of government resources for partisan political purposes:

Official resources of the House must, as a general rule, be used for the performance of official business of the House, and hence those resources may not be used for campaign or political purposes. [. . .]

The misuse of the funds and other resources that the House of Representatives entrusts to Members for the conduct of official House business is a very serious matter. Depending on the circumstances, such conduct may result in not only disciplinary action by the House, but also criminal prosecution.

I mean if anyone ACTUALLY cares about the rules and the laws.

Was the NY Times again the water-boy?

While there are so many levels of manure shoveled by Gowdy, the stink at the Times--the big time publication device--has a singular stink. In another area finally raised & revolving around safety responsibility for at home and abroad, I note that most of the media outlets today--written & TV--covered the matter of comparison with 9/11. That is, even Jake Tapper asked Jeb? Bush about why the focus on Benghazi security is not also applied to 9/11 and Bush administration.  Oh ... I haven't seen a NYTimes story yet (other than an obscure paragraph located at the bottom of the online page that indicates a back & forth difference of opinion between Bush and Trump.)

Finally.  All the skeins seem to be unraveling now. All of undergirding fabrications ... except maybe the apparent Benghazi committee de facto ally, the NYTimes.  (Side: It occurred to me that the whole "safety" matter, after pulling in the obvious 9/11 pass given to the Bushies for years, may really be troubling to NYTimes because it leads to the Judith Miller, Dick Cheney, and the resulting Iraq War.)

would anybody take anything Gowdy says seriously? I'm so glad he's finally showing the entire country what I've known all along and that he's a third rate prosecutor and a political hack. If the GOP had any sense they should run Gowdy out of DC on rails. But then we all know they don't have any sense.

know Gowdy's e-mail habits, would he be willing to release all his e-mails, I would lay some money down that we would find some "classified" info on his account.

BTW: The original talking points were from the CIA not the SD.

Ms. Rice, the United States ambassador to the United Nations, has said that the judgments she offered on the five talk shows on Sept. 16 came from talking points prepared by the C.I.A.

it's about the deliberate redaction in order to make it appear that Clinton was engaged in something nefarious.

Gowdy fabricated a scandal, misrepresented documents in order to support an investigation.

It isn't about the person whose name was redacted.  Way to miss the point.

Gowdy should be censured and drummed out of the House on his lying a$$.  Unfortunately, that would just rocket him to the top of the list of names for Fox's next show-featuring-a-disgraced-Republican.

For you gym-people: News today that Congressional Dems (led by committee senior Dem Cong. It's back to the gym Thursday, so I hope that 124 page missle will be available by then.  The bully boys were not in attendance today so I left copies for them to read at their leisure.  The new paperwork will be particularly valuable the day of the hearing, or whatever it becomes.  The boys will have some insane Republican mambo jumbo ready for me at the gym, so I would love to be prepared.  After all I was an Eagle Scout.
