of the 113th Congress, I thought my assessment was very accurate. Evidently someone disagrees.

113th Congress On Pace To Be Least Productive In Modern History

WASHINGTON -- The current Congress has had just 15 bills signed into law so far, the fewest in recent history.

This is not an insignificant feat. After all, the 112th Congress (2011-2013) was the most unproductive since the 1940s. But even that Congress, by this time in its first year, had 23 bills signed into law.

The Labor Department report also showed that the unemployment rate fell to 7 percent -- the lowest level in five years. The decline reflected a pickup in hiring rather than a shrinking labor force, which has pushed down the jobless rate in previous months. An estimated 455,000 people joined the job market in November.

by jbindc on Fri Dec 06, 2013 at 05:04:10 PM EST
Since 1.3 million people are going to lose unemployment benefits just after Christmas.

Good thing we have a Democratic president who will fight for these people!

    Oh, wait.....

The White House will not insist that an emerging budget deal include an extension of the unemployment benefits program set to expire at the end of the year, press secretary Jay Carney said on Friday.

Carney said that it would be "terrible to tell more than a million families across the country just a few days after Christmas that they're out of benefits," but that the White House was agnostic on how the extension happened.

"The vehicle that they use to do that is less important than the fact that they do it," Carney said.

The statement from Carney echoed House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who said Thursday that an extension of the jobless benefits did not have to be included in a budget deal to win Democratic support.

"Hopefully, it could be part of the budget, but it doesn't have to be part of the budget," Pelosi said. "It could be on its own vehicle, as it goes forward, but it's something we must consider."

...by the same Chamber of Commerce-minded machine every quarter, it seems, whomever is president, whatever party they belong to. If you want to talk the effective unemployment rate -- taking into account those who have given up, are underemployed...you know, that 40% of Americans who have no real assets of any sort, no prospects of finding employment that will offer them anything more than poverty wages, and who have to use the loan shark, er payday loan joint, every two weeks -- then the real unemployment rate is probably around 20%. Very easy to think otherwise if you don't venture into the vast wasteland of economic disadvantage tens of millions of Americans inhabit, and which is largely hidden from us. Without the establishment of an overly humane, overly generous floor that provides work if necessary at a living+ wage, then we're going to all be out in the very bitter cold sooner rather than later. We have no ceiling on wealth, and no effective regulation of the largest crooks, er, financial players in the game. With no ceiling and no floor, what have we got?

    What?

Then there is the Federal background check list, and between the two, they probably know about 99% of the people in the US who own a gun.  So they can remove their tinfoil hats, the government probably already has a registry, thanks in part to the NRA.

    They Will Be Back... (5.00 / 4) (#93)
by ScottW714 on Tue Dec 10, 2013 at 11:38:17 AM EST
    ...if something hits the fan.

But both are valuable assets here, some of the brightest and most effective writers TL has and they will be missed.  It's a damn shame too, but taking some well deserved breaks will surely make their future postings that much better.

As much as I enjoy Edger's input, seemed like this place was really getting to him, some days this place came be frustrating, but when it's stops being whatever it is people want, then it's time to take a break.

For me, I made it my policy to not get dragged into other people's madness.  I realized that if I didn't like where a discussion was going, it's easier to not reply than to try and make a point to someone on the other end of the spectrum and end up with a back and forth that spirals right down the drain.

What has bothered me lately is not the conservative folks so much, but it's the fighting between like minded people.  People who in the past have been in agreement, and that I am afraid has a lot to do with Obama carry a D card, but IMO very R policy oriented.  And if this place is representative of the party in any way, we are probably going to be in trouble in November.

Surely this is what the R's has to deal with in Bush, it's so much easier to unite and go after the opposition, then try and defend one of your own that isn't the product promised or expected.  Some people don't like in house criticism, even when it's warranted, and others, like me, are just plain mad that the person we voted for isn't performing as advertized.

And hopeful this won't get deleted, but I gotta say it.  To me it seems like the author is sliding off policy for some things, and ignoring misdeeds of the administration.  Edger was somewhat right in that the misdeeds of Obama haven't gotten the coverage they deserve.  Things have been pointed out here, but it doesn't seem like they are tied to Obama in the way the misdeeds of the previous administration were tied to GWB.

We never had this many R's in house who taunt and constantly repeat and repost the same exact same message, even after it's been proven to be inaccurate.  Like Shoeprone said:

The trolls are given full rein and those challenging are admonished and deleted.
I don't know if I totally agree, but comments and posters that were routinely deleted/blocked are now allowed.  The selective deleting has gotten ridiculous, it's used to follow TL policy more or less, now it seems to be if the author agrees with you, then it will not be deleted, no matter how many times it's been repeated or how inflammatory it is, agreement equals full rein IMO.  And of course that's fine, it's not our site, it the author's, but it's why the good posters seem to be drifting away and the trolls are multiplying and the general aura has gotten meaner and less educational.

I have to say this, I could not believe Edger's comment about the silence here, was attached and deleted.  Instead of addressing the issue and making their cases, it was attacked and removed without addressing the issue like grown people.  And for BTD, presumably one of the leaders here, to act like a child throwing a tantrum about the posters acting like children and throwing tantrums was unbelievable IMO.  He admitted he went to far, but didn't admit to being part of the very problem he keeps pointing to as the reason he doesn't post anymore.  He was right, but totally oblivious to the fact that the authors/leaders set the tone and the have ability to mold and shape the tone.  I have no idea what TL policy Edger's comments violated other than a criticism of the authors lack of postings in one area.

This was suppose to a paragraph or two about missing some valuable assets around her, sorry.

Jeralyn allows a bit of frivolity and politics on the open threads but that's not the primary purpose of this blog, which is to provide a platform for her (and BTD's) exposition and our discussion of federal law, its effects and implications on life in America (and sometimes, New Zealand).

You're right about the intra-party dissension, the age-old circular firing squad.  I deal with the squabbles by ignoring them.  When someone from your own side insults you, it's tough, but you've got to ask yourself if tossing one back adds or detracts from the atmosphere here.

Not hitting "Post" can be the best response.

this wouldn't be something that was a big deal, but as it is with everything any president does, it's about the lie - not the actual act.

Stupid. You just look like an idiot when you deny something and then have to say, "Oh yeah, well that was a lie."  And then your credibility deteriorates for no good reason (and frankly, this president can't afford to lose any more credibility.)

Obama lived with Kenyan uncle prior to law school, White House says

The White House clarified Thursday that President Barack Obama did live with his Kenyan uncle in Cambridge, Massachusetts for a "brief period of time" before attending Harvard Law School in the 1980s after previously saying there was no record of the two ever meeting.

Onyango Okech Obama, President Obama's uncle, was granted permission Tuesday by a federal immigration judge to stay in the United States, where he has lived illegally for the past five decades. In his testimony before the judge, Obama's uncle mentioned that then-student Obama had stayed with him for three weeks after he was accepted into law school.

The White House was asked about their relationship in 2011 at which time the administration denied the President and Onyango Okech Obama had ever met. Carney retracted that information Thursday saying that the President himself had never been consulted about their relationship.

I don't believe that last part for a minute.  Staff would never just assume something when it comes to a president's family members.  So, more BS on top of the BS that was already put out there.

    But if it is true (5.00 / 1) (#60)

Even worse if it is true that no asked him about it.

That says the president is surrounded by people that are afraid to bring him bad news, probably because there is a "shoot the messenger" attitude in Obama.

We can then say he wasn't told about the website failure... he wasn't told about Benghazi...he wasn't told about the changing of the "grandfathered" rules re existing insurance...etc.

Newspapers and networks are supposed to report. They are reporting an event that occurred at the WH (where Carney spoke). We live in a democracy, not a dictatorship.

However, none of them reported with the kind of commentary you provided.

I expected some people to yawn at this news, others to care a little bit and some others to get excited about it like Pavlov's dog.

Those I expect to get excited like Pavlov's dog are ones I usually expect to also get excited about the President's Kenya nonstories, Benghazi, Obamaphones, etc.

However, you are a self-proclaimed strong HRC supporter and a Democrat. This makes your stance on this matter especially hypocritical. Since you regularly accuse the President of "lying, lying lying" and not having any credibility, I would like to know whether you also believe that HRC never knew that President Clinton had an affair with Lewinsky or whether her "vast right wing conspiracy" statement when confronted with allegations of affairs about her husband made her lose "credibility". If you think that it was impossible for Carney to not ask the President whether he had ever met his uncle, do you really believe that HRC never asked President Clinton about Lewinsky or other alleged affairs?

Your credibility is on the line for having such double standards!

Or ...that they can get shop for doctors and get Adderall at one, Ritalin at another, and Zanax for sleep, from another.  All for the cost of a couple copays and worth infinitely more on the open market.

I could kill my eldest niece right now...she had to get her wisdom teeth pulled, when I call her to see how she is doing she tells me she refused the offered script for percs.

And I thought she loved me!  Uncle Santa might have to give her coal this year.

Maybe the girl can't take opioids, and wasn't even thinking about her dear old uncle in the aftermath of having her teeth ripped out of her mouth.   ;-)
I know I would have to be dying or in excruciating pain before I would take them.  They make me sick to my stomach and I usually wind up throwing up.  I would rather put up with the pain than the awful nausea they cause.

...can get in trouble on scripts is if the person you give them to rats you out.  Seems highly unlikely kdog would rat out his niece given his hatred of people who divulge info to the cops.

What is really odd IMO, is the dog could pickup and transport the prescription for his niece, but should that staple come undone, and a pill come up missing, he goes from helpful uncle to possession in the eyes of the police.

But good to see kids trying to play it smart, not too many out there.

I too refused the script but my doctor insisted I take it even if I was not going to use it. After the anesthesia wore off, I passed out from the pain! After I came to, I dragged myself to the pharmacy which luckily was the next building over from my apartment. The pharmacist thought I was nuts when I said I only wanted two pills, my script was for 20. He informed me my copay would be the same if I got 2 or 20 but I insisted on 2. Took 1 pill when I got home, got really dizzy after a while and fainted! It was not a good day for me.

I have this irrational fear of taking any kind of drugs. I don't know why.

I have no "crush" on the politicians as you contend ... my responses in this particular area are basically bemused responses.  I mean, the Kenyan routine is kind of laughingly stale and matters not to a lot of people who are focused on the various issues confronting government and all of us.  OTOH, if Kenyan stories interest you, that is your prerogative.

"Kenyan story"?  Nice spin.  Maybe you should go work for OFA.

This is about the WH saying one thing which is not true - something easily verifiable and something which, if they knew how to tell the truth, would be no big deal.  But they chose to lie about it. Why?  Especially when they have credibility issues on a range of actually important things - why add fuel to the fire?

The fact that you can't see it just further proves your blindness.

What do you think about this news?

The Maryland official who directly oversaw the rollout of Maryland's health insurance exchange resigned Friday amid continuing technical problems that have hampered the state's online enrollment efforts.

After an emergency session Friday night, the board of the Maryland Health Benefit Exchange accepted the resignation of Rebecca Pearce, its executive director, and thanked her in a statement for working "tirelessly and with tremendous dedication" for more than two years.

In recent weeks, the lagging enrollment and online glitches have embarrassed the administration of Gov. Martin O'Malley (D) and become a political liability for Lt. Gov. Anthony G. Brown (D). Brown, who is seeking to succeed O'Malley, has taken a leadership role in implementing the federal health-care law in Maryland.

The technological problems with Maryland's exchange have been particularly problematic because the state was among the earliest and most aggressive in embracing the health-care law.

A senior O'Malley administration official said Pearce was unhappy with changes in the project leadership that were directed by O'Malley, who has pledged to fix the Web site's problems by the middle of this month.

we don't have to shop for health insurance online, so I never tried to access the Maryland website.
However, if it is that glitchy, then she should have resigned.   Maybe O'Malley and Brown can get someone in there who can provide better fixes and better oversight.
But then, I thought that Kathleen Sibelius should have resigned after the first couple of weeks of the federal website disaster.
