The J. Geils Band last night...great party atmosphere as they covered all their hits and some very cool classic covers...like an old school rock-n-roll revue.

Peter Wolf is a great front man, always giving props to the forefathers and foremothers of the music we love, telling stories, working the stage.  The Uptown Horns were in the house adding soul to the brew.  Gotta tell ya it was hard work watching anything but the back-up singers shaking their moneymakers all night, some sweet singing foxes, hot damn.

Good times, catch J. Geils if ya can people!

They closed it out with "Land of 1000 Dances"...not an arse in a seat in the house.

Report: US strikes on Iran would risk major war

The report compiled by former government officials, national security experts and retired military officers is to be publicly released Thursday. It says achieving more than a temporary setback in Iran's nuclear program would require a military operation -- including a land occupation -- more taxing than the Iraq and Afghanistan wars combined.

    ...quit hoping we fail. joke.

The story is about people being so broke they can't afford bank fees and turn to check cashing places and renting furniture by the week.

The study also found that one in four households, or 28.3 percent, either had one or no bank account. A third of these households said they do not have enough money to open and fund an account.

That's just sad and I would hardly call not affording something so essential, opting out.

Not only are these Americans more vulnerable to high fees and interest rates, but they are also cut off from credit to buy a car or a home or pay for college, the report from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. said.

Cutting off one's nose to spite one's face.

Payday lenders and check cashing stores are nothing more than loan-sharking thieves, happily putting people into a horrendous cycle of debt. People who want to opt out of banking with the too-big-to-fails have other options, such as joining as small local banks or credit unions. I've been with a credit union for 18 years, and would never have been able to start two of my businesses or buy two of my cars without it. I never pay a fee for anything, have low rates on loans and slightly higher rates on interest. And I have no debt, because I pay my credit card off in full every month.

I understand the temptation to head for the hills where banks are concerned, but hiding money under your mattress and foregoing any credit at all means you will pay more in the long run.

And yes, I know my words fall on deaf ears. I can only hope the hundreds of thousands opting out of the system realize what they are doing to their opportunities when future needs arise.

At least the check-cashing guy is a local guy, and his profit is more likey to stay in the local economy.

I wouldn't touch a payday loan with a ten-foot pole.  Bad news, no argument from me.  otoh, the big banks won't even look at those people...at least they have somewhere to go for a loan, even if it is a total rip-off.

Credit Unions are the way to go for "normal" people, no doubt.  For me, Sealy Postuerpedic Savings all day every day.

Who made the incendiary film? (none / 0) (#9)
by shoephone on Thu Sep 13, 2012 at 11:38:55 AM EST
Nikoula Basseley Nikoula, according to HuffPo, and at least a dozen other news sites. In addition to the questionable themes presented, actors in the film say they were duped, and that their lines were dubbed over after the filming.

A Coptic Christian living in California, Basseley was arrested and sent to jail in 2010 for bank fraud. What a speciman.

And this quote, which is in about every post at your blog is really something else Jim, surprised you haven't used it here seeing your fondness of it.

"Unlimited tolerance must lead to the disappearance of tolerance. If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, if we are not prepared to defend a tolerant society against the onslaught of the intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed, and tolerance with them." - Karl Popper

Real nice, and quite amusing when you consider the intolerance you exude on your blog, damn it's like you bask in the irony of your own intolerance.  Not to mention how this is in direct conflict with the very Constitution you claim to hold so dear.  But I get it, your intolerance is justified.

I think my description was accurate.

I am hopeful that Jeralyn will step in and put a stop to people calling others liars and idiots. At one time that would have been a no-no. But, if a coarsened discourse is now acceptable I know all the words and will respond in kind.

And if you don't like the blog, don't read it. I have never mentioned it here and have never linked to it.

As for Popper, I think he makes the point quite clearly that we should not tolerate people who try to tell us what we can and cannot say.

That defines the current PC nonsense being flouted around quite well.

And I have never said I was a "moderate." I have said I am a social liberal who believes in gay rights, including marriage, a woman's right to chose, changing our drug laws, (other) minority rights, in LWOP instead of executions.

And I have always been very much a hawk on foreign policy.

So if you find my opposition to Obama and his failed foreign policy and my opposition to anything I see as supporting Shariah law in the US as immoderate then you are welcome to do so.

if there is one other than the trailer, is of mysterious provenance. But, what is known is that it's purpose is as agent provocateur.  From Salaman Rushdie's Satanic Verses,  Danish cartoons, that reverend in Florida, Terry Jones, who wanted to burn holy books, the soldiers in  Afghanistan who did burn Qurans, and, even, Pope Benedict's infamous Regensburg Lecture at which he used an unfavorable remark  about Islam made in the 14th century, we know that violence or threats of violence follows like flatulence follows beans.

Determining what, if any, coordination in events of the past days requires investigation into a possible foreign or domestic genesis.

U.S. officials say this was not an out-of-control demonstration, but a well-executed assault by a well-armed band of thugs. Officials suspect the attackers are either associated with or sympathize with al Qaeda and that they took advantage of a demonstration sparked by that anti-Muslim film to launch their assault on the anniversary of 9/11.

So was this well planned attack just waiting for a spark, clearly the video gave the attack cover, but the timing doesn't make sense.  Just wait for the Americans to do some thing stupid before attacking, doesn't seem like a good plan.  It's not like something like this happens every week.  it's like they knew when the film was going to be released.

Are you suggesting that the producers of the film were coordinating with the attackers?

Not at all, but it's very odd how a well coordinated attack occurred in the midst of a protest over a video released the day before.

The plausible answer is they were waiting for something, or they they had planned on staging some sort of demonstration.

I don't think the Muslim hating 'film' makers coordinated with Muslin extremists.

And while everyone can talk about the first amendment, this is global, and as much as I love that Amendment, it's not universal.  The fact is these guys released an explosive hate film that ended up getting American's killed.  And if they did it on purpose they need to feel the fire.  Not sure what that fire is, but they don't get to walk away scot free, especially if they lied to everyone involved.  That has got to be fraud on some level.  They clearly incited violence, and by lying to the actors it's not a stretch to believe it was purposeful.

What Muslims should do is create an identical film, but throw jesus into it, then the idiot brigade just might understand why people are upset.

And there are many similar to it floating around the internet today.

The latest article I read says the trailer was put on You Tube way back in July, and had gotten some mainstream ME media attention recently before 9/11.

So, I think the trailer is just another in a long line of reasons/excuses/whatever for some people to get  riled up.

Whether it was "the" reason for the Benghazi attack or not does not seem particularly important in the grand scheme of things.

What in my statement would suggest that this was my theory?  I was asking whether this was your theory, as you appeared to be suggesting.

Interesting how people will make allusions rather than just spit it out.

    Parent

    in your last sentence...

fwiw, the "latest article" I referenced previously (but neglected to link to, mea culpa) corrected several facts from previous articles that I had read, including, like I said, that the trailer's You Tube release date was sometime in July, not 9/10. This did change my opinion about what had happened.

So, don't be afraid to spit it out, what is your theory re the trailer?

Not my style, generally.  If I have a theory or want to make an accusation, I'll just say it.  But I understand that some people aren't like that.

As far as the trailer, I don't really have a theory.  From news reports so far, it sounds like the producer of this video (Bacile/Nikoula/whatever) is part of some anti-Islamic group that was just trying to stir the pot and maybe get some attention.  It's an easy way for extremists to incite the mobs and light a fire.  I hope the producers of this film are exposed, but it doesn't look (so far) like they've done anything illegal ...

    ... just utterly irresponsible.

Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, who the AP said is on probation after being convicted of financial crimes, also was twice sentenced to jail after being found guilty of intent to manufacture methamphetamine in the late 1990s, the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office told NBC News.

Court records show that Nakoula also was convicted on federal fraud charges in Los Angeles in 2010. As part of the conditions of his probation, Nakoula was barred from using "any online service at any location" without the prior approval of his probation officer, according to a copy of court records in the case.

Copts make up a minority in Egypt where they have been victims of discrimination and sometimes attacks by Islamic extremists.

..and after looking at the 'film' yesterday for the 3 mins I could tolerate it, it made total sense.  There are parts that clearly are dubbed over.

Here is part of it, watch for the dubbing, it's pretty obvious.

and that is six minutes of my life I will never get back. Yes, there is overdubbing -- mostly in parts where the name Mohammad is uttered.

It's obvious this was made in about two days time and then sent around on YouTube. Ridiculously bad moviemaking. I did better than this in seventh grade, with a friend's Super 8.

It's impossible to know what to make of it.

regarding all the comments about the film. The parts I could stand to watch were shot via Chromakey or green screen.  The weather people do it all the time.  They have all the background shots ready and the actors do their thing in front of it.  It was probably shot up at the old Spahn Ranch film location where Charles Manson lived.  It's a piece of crap.

a cameraman for ABC there came a day when the entire network went from film to video.  We didn't understand what was inside the Betacams but we learned Chromakey immediately because it was fun.  If you wrapped yourself in a green blanket and stood in front of the green screen and peeked out they could only see what was exposed.  You became the invisible man.  fun but silly.

It's almost like a 5th grader tried to make a Monty-Python-like spoof ... no offense to 5th graders.  The writing, the acting, the production values.  It's hard to believe someone spent $50,000 on this, let alone $5 million.  I have no doubt you could have done a better job in seventh grade.

I felt like making myself a tinfoil hat, too.  It did briefly cross my mind to wonder if some of the money for the video came from oh, say, the Koch brothers or Sheldon Adelson, or others like that. But, no, I think that's too far-fetched, even for them.

I would have speculated that Grover Norquist was somehow involved, except that he is married to a Palestinian Muslim, and I can't see him having anything to do with this.

and crush them.  I know how to do it but we need writers and actors and actresses.  We need a great idea and an even greater script.  We also do not need any green screen crap.  I like to shoot and edit with flat cuts of time and space.  Dr. Zhivago comes to mind.
