Here's Hillary: No Decision Tonight

Update: Transcript here.

Live blogging speech:

Thank you S.D.

Congratulates Obama and supporters on extraordinary race they have run. Our party and democracy is stronger for it.

It is an honor to have run with him and to call him my friend.

16 months ago you and i began a journey to remake America, lists geographic parts of America. [More...]

I am enormously grateful to those who came out because you asked yourselves who will be the best candidate, who is ready to lead our country.

Everyone had a chance to vote. Nearly 18 million of you cast your vote for our campaign. We carried the popular vote with more votes than any candidate in presidential history. We won together the swing states necesary to get to 270 electoral votes.

You wanted a leader who will stand up for our values, a country who will count every single vote.

While this primary was long I am so proud we stayed the course together.

Because we stood our ground every citizen had a chance to vote, a record 35 million people.

I am committed to working to take back the White House in November.

None of you are invisible to me. I will keep standing for you and working for you.

People are asking: What does Hillary want. I want what I've always worked for: to end the war, turn the economy around, health care for everyone and I want the 18 million who voted for me to be respected and no longer treated as invisible.

I have an old-fashioned notion that public service is about helping people. This nation has given me every opportunity and I want it for every American.

I want to restore America's leadership in the world.

People are shouting Denver.

There were days when I had the energy to fight for all of us and when I didn't I leaned on you.

So many people said this race was over months ago and you brought me back every time.

I will carry your stories with me.

Where do we go from here? This has been a long campaign and I will be making no decisions tonight.

But, this has always been your campaign, so to the 18 million who voted for me, I want to hear from you. Go to HillaryClinton.com and tell me.

I will be meeting with party leaders and supporters and determining the best way to proceed.

More thanks to everyone. I am honored and humbled by your support.

I want her on the national stage for at least 8 more years.

And Obama ought to know that if he wins in Nov the only way to possibly keep her from challenging him in 2012 would be to have her in the ticket.  Even then...if he hasn't delivered on health care or Iraq, I hope she would challenge him.

She is too good to be wasted in some cabinet job or serving in the Senate with the idiots who did not endorse her.

Besides, I believe the unity ticket is the only sure bet for a Dem win in November.

And I at least want a female VP in my lifetime.

    YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Obama has been the most disrespectful to voters than any candidate I've ever known.
At least no other candidate has ever called me a racist for not supporting them.
And no other candidate has ever bashed older voters - and thrown them aside like they were unwanted trash!
We should not have to ask a nominee for POTUS to be respectful! It should be granted willingly.  But no!  the "uniter" has been stomping around the United States trashing the Clinton administration and dividing the party.

It's funny.  I love the fictional character Hermione in Harry Potter. Hermione is incredibly smart, tough, and loyal.  She finds time for everything and everyone.  Doesn't back down from a fight, and has amazing courage as well presence of mind.  She is proactive and has a great heart.  She is always prepared and saves Harry's a** many times.

Hillary always reminds me of a living embodiment of Hermione, or the other way around.  And I mean that as a great compliment. And I think Rowling will also take it as a great compliment to the character she created.

Anyone who doesn't admire Hillary Clinton after this primary election, after all she faced, is an utter fool.

Ah, right. CNN doesn't count votes that haven't been cast yet.

    Personal (5.00 / 21) (#29)
by chrisvee on Tue Jun 03, 2008 at 08:41:38 PM EST
When this primary started, I supported her because I thought she was the most competent of the group and the most likely to be able to turn things around. But somewhere along the way, she's managed to infuse her personality into her campaign in a way that makes her seem very genuine.  I admire how tough she is in the face of obstacles that would reduce me to a quivering, weepy mess. Despite the fact that she's a politician and I trust none of them, she's really turned me into quite a devoted fan.  Now, it's personal. Her speech is quite lovely.  Everyone's vote is a prayer.  Even an atheist like me doesn't mind that turn of phrase.

    Karmic (5.00 / 2) (#158)
by makana44 on Tue Jun 03, 2008 at 09:05:52 PM EST
It's really a shame. Had Hillary prevailed this year's election might truly have focused on the issues and buried the Republicans. But instead the Daley Axelrove machine against the Rove Gramm machine will likely result in one the dirtiest, nastiest elections of all time. McCain's surrogates will sling it and Obama's will sling it right back. Especially given the structure of new media and the way information flies at light-speed and the now generally accepted overt complicity of television news, this year's election is going to be u-g-l-y. And instead of presenting to the world an America that has been chastened and turned off by the despicability of its politicians and now turning face to a brighter future (in fact, the way it is for most of us), it will present an America mired in its demons and unable to extricate itself from its karmic muck (the way it now is, unfortunately, for all of us).

The story of Hillary Clinton's comeback from certain crushing defeat to actual triumph through the will of the people, only to have it be all for naught due to political cowardice, back room deals, and malfeasance, will be one for the ages.

I, for one, find her a profoundly inspiring politician, one who I actually like and trust; and it's been a long time since I've been able to say all those things about any politician (Gore only after the fact).

Taylor Marsh said (silver lining: Taylor, Jeralyn, Anglechal and many more... great women who came to the fore in this challenging time):

Senator Obama has to win in November. For the sake of this country, I sure hope John McCain doesn't win and I'll do my part to make the case against him, but I have serious concerns about Obama's coalition and the folks he's turned off going into the general election. He's weaker now than he's ever been and the end of the negative material on him hasn't begun to crest. So, he'd better win in November. If not, the day after the election the Clintons, with Hillary leading, will come roaring back. Bank on it. If Obama wins in November, as I've said before, I hope Hillary is there as his vice president, which is the surest way to make that happen.

I understand what Taylor says about the Democrats need to prevail this year for the good of the country. But I'm not convinced that a permanent eclipse of the Clinton wing of the Democratic party is good for the country. And this is why, as of this moment, I cannot see myself voting for Obama this November. Karma bites, and sometimes you have to suffer through the negativity in order to get passed it. In my book the Daley machine is not any better than the Rove machine. That's the bottom line. Do we bite the bullet now, then make it so and make it right in 2012?

I stressed the absolute blowback an Obama nomination would be for the Party, race relations, and, thus, the country.  The Party would be absolutely exposed as corrupt and nominating a black man by rigging the nomination, even outright theft, will be totally exploited by the right to hurt race relations.  Not to mention that he's just not qualified and is the product of a corrupt Chicago political machine.  And that's without even mentioning black liberation theology.

Besides, she's the only one that can win.  We can't afford another Republican administration.

Many of us actually think BO will be WORSE than McCain. Why? Obama has no experience - only his ego - upon which to base this candidacy. Plain. And. Simple.

He is a political lurker...always in the picture, but never out front, never leading the charge. Even his "famous" speech resulted in not a single attempt by BO to end the war once he got into the Senate. But then, he was so busy on day one running for his next promotion he forgot that little issue, didn't he?

I remember reading about him running into committee members on their way to a press conference about something they had just accomplished. He said, "What's up" and they told him and he said, "Can I come along"? They said sure - they wanted people on the podium for pictures and then he had the audacity (whoops!) to take the mic and speak as if he had been personally involved in the accomplishment. Staffers were pissed as hell at what he did.

He lurked in CT in 2006 (never really coming out and supporting Ned Lamont). He lurks on pro-choice (using weasel words and voting present). He lurks on race (demanding a dialog and now saying we should all move on - pun intended!). Condemning the Gas Tax Holiday proposal when he supported other such proposals three times.

Where in the world does he really stand on things? I don't know. And I'm not willing to take a chance.

If we elect a lurker then Repugs will rule the day anyway because he lurks right as much as he lurks left.

NOT what we must have for this country if we are expected to move forward.

Plus, he has destroyed any improvements we have made in race relations since 1960.  He should be ashamed of himself.

And, this is now my response on Roe v Wade...(not my words...those of another poster whom I know and respect...and with whom I agree!):

"If my younger sisters lose Roe Wade it will be their own fault for taking the rights they have for granted, because they didn't fight for them. They are complacent and can take the time to swoon over a sexy empty suit who has already set gender relations back a minimum of 30 years, and we haven't even gotten to the General Election campaign yet. Serves them right. Not my problem. I know how not to get pregnant.

It's my job to protect the rights I fought for that matter to me. This is a misogynist's campaign and if younger women are too busy spawning over Leland Gaunt handing out Needful Things and discussing his vibrating phone when he leans on one of them, then they will have to learn to take the consequences of their own folly along with the consolations. Maybe then they will Get It. I have already done well in my life. Complacency is their enemy, not mine. Let em eat cell phones."

    --------------------------------------
    As Abraham Lincoln said:

"I am not bound to win, but I am bound to be true. I am not bound to succeed, but I am bound to live by the light that I have. I must stand with anybody that stands right, and stand with him while he is right, and part with him when he goes wrong."

My suggestion? Ask Obama. He's the one that did it. You can't "disenfrachise" someone from a vote that was impossible to cast. And you can't award votes to someone who did not earn them. But like I said, the person to ask about denying people the chance to vote for Obama in Michigan would be...Barack Obama.

Furthermore, if we want to talk about unfair, unfairis having delegates you EARNED apportioned to the loser as a result of his political decision to remove himself.

Edwards' exit was well done.  I think Hillary's should be and will be that graceful, despite the media's shamelessness.

UHC and "No decisions tonight" and the great crowd.  Those are the three main things I come away with.

I saw the speech in the cafeteria at work ... It was great ... I love how much she emphasized universal healthcare (which she has been working for for "16 years not 16 months"!) and know she will continue to fight for it ...

I clapped out loud in a crowded cafeteria when she said she would be making no decisions tonight!

I'm glad she asked for our views.  That's one of her strengths, that she listens.  I will go definitely go to the website and tell her we need for her to stay in until Denver.

I really fear the Democratic Party will be committing political suicide by nominating Obama.
