Late Night: R.I.P. Delaney Bramlett

We've had another great music loss today. Delaney Bramlett, age 69, died today of complications following gall bladder surgery.

As Susie Madrak says, he sang like an angel. Crooks and Liars has more.

    am not familiar with his music.

    Tonight I went to see Frost/Nixon, only to find that the showing I wanted was sold out. Oh well.

    I picked up a copy of My Life in France by Julia Child, and I am already halfway through. It is marvelous so far. (I think I just want the food. . .)

    Late Night posts are open threads. if Jeralyn has changed her mind about that, it would be news to me. So I was using this as an open thread, while trying not to ignore the topic Jeralyn opened with: the death of an artist she and many other people like.

    But why you need to comment on me, I don't know.

    Historically RIP posts have not been open threads. It is for people to mourn celebrate etc..

    Death trumps late night open threads.

    He was very popular in these parts. He and Bonnie Bramlett lived in this area for a period of time and worked with a lot of local musicians, many (most? I don't know, but maybe) of whom are now gone, thanks to drugs and alcohol and generally profligate lifestyles.

    I loved Delaney and Bonnie when I was a kid, and I would have liked both to be survivors of all that. But fate intervenes.

    He and Bonnie split up decades ago. Since then, she has been both a singer and an actress --as has their daughter, Bekka Bramlett. Bekka and Bonnie often sing together on albums. Bonnie had a recurring role on the tv show Roseanne and was in the movies "The Doors" and "The Guardian," among others. Bonnie had a new album this year and has been enjoying a successful resurgence of her singing career. I don't think she's in that category either.

    Perhaps you were talking about other musicians in your area, but I wanted to make that clear so as not to unfairly tarnish them.

    ... the people in this area, many (most?) of whom simply never recovered from that period of time - which is very sad because they were quite talented.

    Others, like Delaney and Bonnie, moved on. Too many here didn't.

    the gallbladder is one of the most common procedures, although patients are usually younger. This is the first I've heard someone die from it, although you're correct about Warhol, according to the net.

    Probably the biggest risk is anesthesia, itself, for older patients.

    this excludes obvious surgical mistakes, like cutting into the small bowel or liver. Even then, patients who ultimately die of sepsis usually live weeks or months.

    ...disease. Because he had heart disease they did not think he would survive the surgery and so treated a severe infection only with antibiotics. His heart didn't survive the infection either. But he was in his late seventies when he died, older than Bramlett. But yeah, it could have been anesthesia complications.

    ...and will be very much missed.  Singer, songwriter, producer, legendary session player--Delaney was one of a kind.  

    During his career, he performed, co-wrote or recorded with stars such as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, John Lennon, Dave Mason, Billy Preston, the Everly Brothers and Mac Davis. He also produced artists including Etta James and Elvin Bishop.

    He wrote/co-wrote such classics as "Let it Rain", "Superstar" and "Never Ending Song of Love".  

    Eric Clapton credits Delaney with teaching him how to sing.  That alone is testiment to his lasting impression on popular music.

    I liked so many of their songs. And since Clapton and Dave Mason sang (sing) a lot of them, at least the music will always live on. I saw Dave Mason in concert many times during my junior high and high school years and he always sang, "Only You Know and I Know", one of my favorite Delaney and Bonnie songs.

    I haven't kept up with Bonnie's career, but don't forget, she's on some of the old great Little Feat recordings. I put on Dixie Chicken today and it sounds as hot and funky as it ever did. You can hear both Bonnies (Bramlett and Raitt) coming through loud and clear on the harmonies.

    I do wish YouTube had more D&B vids.

    RIP Delaney. You gave us something very special.
