Sunday Morning Open Thread

Random sports thoughts - the Gators were not great, but they don't stink either. Love the Cubs tanking. Rooting for the Angels to get off the deck and beat the Red Sox. Kimbo Slice is a fraud.

Your turn.

The Republicans have to divert attention from the obvious failures of their Administration and the conservative ideology.  It's their only hope.

Anyone who points to a single cause or single event of the financial meltdown is doing so to fulfill some private agenda.  They aren't to be taken seriously.

There is an interesting article about FNMA and Freddie Mac in the NY Times business section.  It goes along way towards explaining the events that led to their takeover and their role in the cascading meltdown.

have helpfully supplied this video of the event in question.

While this so-called sport flies way, way below my radar, I think the video pretty much speaks for itself.  However, until someone gets struck with a runaway grocery cart, it won't be true Jackie Chan-style combat in my book.

Slice took a graze on the chin and went down, i watched it like 20 times and still cannot believe that his chin could possibly be that fragile.  No where near ready for prime time.....

That's right: they disappointed, just as we knew they would.  Good old Cubs!

It hurts a little more this year though.  No stupid fan to blame.  No sense that we were lucky even to get into the playoffs.  Just a great regular season and three crappy games of baseball against the Dodgers.  Sigh.

so catch today's game to see if they tie up the playoff series, and that would give you another game to occupy your time, too.

Wisconsinites are redecorating today, at least those who don't already have side-by-side or stacked tv sets . . . as we already do in an armoire with two tv sets, top and bottom, for my sports-loving men in the house.

Why? Both the Brewers and the Packers play at the same time, at noon.  Btw, that means a lot of sermons at the last Sunday mass were short ones.  I grew up with a priest who was a past master at what he called "Packers sermons" of less than seven minutes to get himself and everyone home by game time.  Those were the Sundays when we also got Communion as if the guy was on speed, moving up and down the line to shovel wafers into mouths in record time -- with the help of extra altar boys to keep up, one shift on the line while another ran chalices back and forth to the priest.

We have our priorities in Wisconsin.  God comes first, but we know he has Saint Vince Lombardi at his side on Packer Sundays.  Today, those of us who remember the '57 series hope that God has Saint Warren Spahn sittig on His other side.

in appealing to the God-loving, gun-clinging heartlanders in fly-over country.  They know what it's like on the ground here.  A big seller is battery-operated portable tvs with earplugs for duck blinds to be able to watch both ducks and Packers.  Restraint is required, of course; loud rooting for the Pack is not allowed, lest it alert the ducks.

And they know what its like on the water, when our lakes freeze.  Lots of long electrical extension lines for tvs in ice-fishing shacks.  (No need to use them for refrigerators, because the ice keeps the beer cold already.)

The two early red-zone turnovers didn't exactly put me in a good mood to start the day.

I was so PO'd after the first failed 4th down try that I turned the game off and went to REI to do some retail therapy.

I was surprised to see the highlights and find we actually had a chance late.  I'll say this for Kirk, he's not afraid to roll the dice.

They didn't play nearly as well as the score would indicate. As a long-time Gator fan I'm sure you share my experience of the moment every season when we realize they're just not as good as we thought/ hoped or were told (by their position in the early rankings). As a long-gone friend of mine used to say (he died shortly before the '96 championship season) "Florida always finds a way to break your heart". That happened last week with the excruciating Ole Miss loss, but if they beat LSU and look a lot better doing it I could be happy about them again.

Anyone see it? The reviews are coming out now (no previews for the press) and they're pretty terrible, but that's no surprise. Watching the trailer, I found myself thinking 'this is what they chose to sell the picture?'. It's finishing at the low end of this weekends movies.

Conservatives can be funny, but satire of strawmen is not satire, that's just frat boy bullying. I might rent it or catch it on TV just to see a real life train wreck recorded on film.
