Senate Passes $600 Billion Defense Authorization Bill

Give it away, Give it away now. [Red Hot Chile Peppers]

While most of the Congressional news today is about the $1 trillion spending bill and the potential government shutdown (which won't happen), I'm more concerned about the $600 billion Defense Authorization bill that passed the Senate today and now goes to Obama to sign.

War-spending is a bottomless pit. The bill provides $521.3 billion for the military and $63.7 billion for overseas operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. [More....]

The Senate overwhelmingly approved the bill that authorizes funds for basic military operations, including construction of new ships, aircraft, and weapons as well as a 1 percent pay raise for the troops. The vote was 89-11.

The measure would authorize the training and equipping of moderate Syrian rebels battling the extremists, a mandate that lasts for two years. It also would provide $5 billion to train Iraqis to counter the militants who brutally rule large sections of Iraq and Syria.

And to top it all off, the bill retains the prohibition against transferring Guantanamo prisoners to the U.S.

The Pentagon is bleeding us dry. We're just throwing money down the drain. One of the goals of the terrorists is to destroy our economy. This bloated budget will help them.

When you allow the State to become too big (none / 0) (#1)

    This is what you get.

    REASON MAGAZINE

This example is the military.   Across the federal goverment we see the same inertia.   More and more as we continue to expand the size and scope of the Federal Govermnent.

The mistake we all make is only caring about or criticizing the programs or agencies we don't like for partisan reasons.   That inability to see the bigger picture enables our dear leaders to keep it all growing over time while weber bogged down in the meaningless short term squabbles over "cuts" to our favorite programs which are over long game simply a slowdown in the overall inevitable growth.

Why I say cut it all.   Until you cut it all nothing is going to really be cut.

Don't spend it all in one place, there, troops.
