Feds Charge East Haven Cops For Mistreating Immigrants

The investigation into abuse of immigrants by the East Haven, CT police force has taken years.

Today, the Department of Justice charged four officers, Dennis Spaulding, David Cari, Jason Zullo and Sgt. John Miller, with conspiracy, deprivation of rights and obstruction of justice. Miller is the head of the local police union.

The Indictment is here. The officers were arrested by the FBI. One agent said of the misconduct, "They behaved like bullies." [More...]

DOJ released its report on the investigation in December. The report found:

Based on our investigation, we find that the East Haven Police Department engages in discriminatory policing against Latinos including: targeting Latinos for discriminatory traffic enforcement; treating Latino drivers more harshly than non-Latino drivers after traffic stops; and intentionally and woefully failing to design and implement internal systems of control that would identify, track, and prevent such misconduct.

The pattern or practice of discriminatory policing that we observed is deeply rooted in the Police Department’s culture and substantially interferes with the ability of the Department to deliver services to the entire East Haven community.

    a worthwhile investigation leading to arrests...not everyday ya see that from the DOJ/FBI.

    The NYPD investigation should be a slam dunk...talk about bullying dicriminatory policing.

    ...flagrant for the FBI to step in and make arrests.  Sheriff Joe hasn't even had the the FBI intervene and he's no chump when it comes to abusing the brown people.
