Strikes in Chile for Social Justice. In the US?

More than 250 protesters were arrested within the past 24 hours as Chilean students, now with support of some unions, continue their protests of government education policies. See representative news biteshere.  More on the flip

The Chilean students, organized throughout the nation, are fighting against a system that makes it almost impossible for lower-income students to make it through the university system. The poorest get aid, but the rest of the middle class have to provide between 85 and 100 percent of their fees.

Students have been protesting for months, and a strike by students started some days ago.  Education, labelled the panacea for getting out of the lower bounds of society's class system,   has been systematically denied to all but the richest or poorest in Chile since the days of dictator Agosto Pinochet.

Pinochet, a fascistic leader, did little to reform education. However, popularly elected governments have done little or nothing since 1990, when Pinochet's regime was overthrown.

Students have taken the matter into their own hands, but with limited success. It looks as though the rulers in Chile will continue to confront most if not all of the demands made by students, claiming 'un-affordibility.'

My question doesn't involve the students nor the Chilean government's response, but instead concerns the USA. Why were the only protests against government policy in Wisconsin, a few in Indiana, and a smattering in Ohio?

What has the USA lost that makes people decide they have had enough?  I see this attitude throughout the USA.  I don't see this attitude in Europe or South America, though.

Someone explain it to me... before I leave. Because I'm done, it feels like. I haven't felt this disconnected from government at all levels in my life. Plutocrats taking care of Plutocrats.

At the end of the day, Marcus Garvey was correct.

"The whole world is run on bluff."

I think the US has gotten too afraid to call. and when that happens, the big guys get to bully the little guys until it's over.

America is anomalous in that, it seems, average working people here, instead of turning their righteous anger on the powers that be, turn it on each other.  Union membership, the ONLY real way a working American has of getting a beyond decent wage, is seen as some kind of scarlet letter.    Ask all those cops if their union is a socialist commie outfit.  We love all those NYFD guys, but I guess we hate that they're in a union.

Sadly, Dean Wormer had it right: Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life.  But we seem very happy to.  Cheap junk food and well drinks, and corporate sleight of hand, is all you need, it would appear, to turn a great nation into a army of sofa spuds, physically and intellectually.  Hopefully this movement will help change that.

We have an insidious system.  That's its greatest "attribute."  Insidiousness.  That and our great mainstream media, who have more in common with the plutocrats than any working people.  Again, wasn't always thus.

I'm writing too fast and thinking too little, and house-daddy has to get dinner ready for my bring home the bacon baby.

Now get on, Jeff, and heal up and get your ace outta here.  Wish we could follow you.

we resigned ourselves to the scraps from the 1%er table.

But we might be getting it back jack, don't count us out yet...

ows is growing. We will be in a thousand cities in this country by the end of the month - hundreds of cities in other countries. We will see General Assemblies on six continents.

Liberty Square has grown exponentially over the last three weeks. It is time to form a second General Assembly in Manhattan. We expect more to follow.

On October eighth at three in the afternoon a General Assembly will convene in Washington Square Park. At the same time Anti-Flag will play an acoustic set in Liberty Square in solidarity with our movement's expansion.

We are growing. Block by block - city by city. We will see change in this country, in this world. It will happen sooner than you can imagine.

That's Stage I, parading our discontent in civil disobedience, from sea to polluted sea.  Occupy all the institutions of grift...surround them.  Don't let the economic assassins go to work without them getting an earful, every damn day.  When they barricade all of Wall St. to keep the public off public land, run it over and take your lumps. They may have a right to lock the door of the exchange, but they have no right to close the entire street.

Some ideas for Stage II, everybody's gotta pull their pennies from the big banks...close your accounts.  Find a humble credit union or cash and carry.  Watch what you buy and who you buy it from, our laziness and smaller-scale selfishness must end, take responsibility for our part in creating this mess and change our ways.  And for god's sake don't put any cash in a 401k, close that crap too, do not give them your money to gamble with in a crooked casino.  Minimize the leechery on the meager fruits of our labor...we don't have to help fund our demise. Same goes for taxes, dodge everyone ya can...no taxation without representation, do not fund the protection racket of the 1%.

See ya in Liberty Square, Washington Square, and hundreds of other peaceful assemblies.
