Gearing Up for the MTV Video Music Awards:

Los Angeles is gearing up for tomorrow night's MTV Video Music Awards. Lady Gaga is up for 13 awards. She's nominated twice in the music video of the year category, for Telephone and Video Phone. "Telephone" is a video of her getting thrown in jail. Beyonce bonds her out, and then they go on a homicidal rage killing people in a diner. Thelma and Louise, it's not.

Beyonce is nominated five times for her video, Video Phone, made with....Lady Gaga. (Both videos are also up in the Best Collaboration category.)Then there's the Glitter Queen, Ke$ha, who is up for three awards, including Best Female Video, Best Pop Video and Best New Artist for "Tik Tok." I am clueless as to how it counts either as music or award material. What am I missing? [More...]

Chelsea Handler is hosting. Both Taylor Swift and Kanye West will perform, but not together. Reportedly, Taylor will sing a song about her getting snubbed by Kanye last year.

Viewers voted online and by text message. For Best New Artist, voting stays open through the show. The other categories are now closed. Who watches?

I've got the True Blood season finale (none / 0) (#1)

and Mad Men and the Braves to watch so I'll have to miss it. I'm not big on awards shows anyway and there's too much crowd shrieking on MTV awards shows to even attempt to watch.

After some initial resistance to Lady Gaga, I've come to really appreciate her creativity. Her songs have great beats and her videos are fun to watch. Teaming up with Beyonce' was unexpected and made the song and video a winner. I had never seen the explicit version-like the tamer one better. I blame my daughter for sucking me into the Gaga vortex-she played her songs incessantly for months before she left for college a few weeks ago.

    I am secretly a Lady Gaga fan too (none / 0) (#2)

Some local DJ attempted to simply say the words that are the lyrics to Poker Face on the radio here a few days ago and I died laughing.  But Lady Gaga can make a song out of that that everyone will want to listen to and buy and play on command.  Count me impressed.

I resisted it, like I resisted being a Madonna fan, but then threw in the towel and turned up the volume.

Ellen DeGeneris did the same thing (just speaking the lyrics) to Bad Romance and it was pretty hysterical.  But then she's done that to other songs, too.  Songs that she clearly likes.

I am such a putz. I have no idea who Lady Gaga is.

Though I did thoroughly enjoy the Ohio State game today. And Michigan. And my daughter attended her first game at Purdue.

    Good times.

    Don't underestimate "Tik-Tok". (none / 0) (#6)

I don't know if it was the MTV video of the year, but Ke$ha's song was certainly adaptable to different applications.

Pick yer poison (if you dare):

1.) Simpsons Opening, featuring God dancing with the devil.

    - or -

2.) July 2010 SNL performance, with astronauts and lasers.

That was clearly live and not lip-synched.  Same with "Your Love is my Drug" (followed the link).

getting old when the only names you recognize are the presenters, and most of those seem like they arrived last week.
