a broken elbow sounds particularly painful :(  Best wishes  for her surgery going well and a very speedy recovery.

Worse than painful, it was her right arm (5.00 / 1) (#18)

    and I don't think she's left handed.

There are some important nerves that may be damaged in this kind of injury leaving some serious residual in the function of the right arm and hand.  I trust she will have excellent surgeons and all will go well.  Fortunately someone else can do the typing and note taking.  I also guess she doesn't do much cooking these days (or cookie baking).

How did that happen?  Elbow, that's not good.

I pray she heals without any complications, and recovers full use of her arm.

    Sotomayor and now HRC? (5.00 / 4) (#4)

If I was a conspiracy theorist, I might be suspicious....

But, it sounds like it's been a rough month for powerful females here in DC!

Wishing SoS Clinton a pain free and quick recovery!!!

    It will be far from pain-free (5.00 / 2) (#12)

and not a quick recovery -- saw my father go through this, younger then than Clinton is, and it was difficult surgery followed by a long bout of physical therapy.

Then again, this is Hillary Rodham Clinton, who seems to only get stronger against adversity.  She'll probably set records for how soon she could again bend an elbow, as we say, with the workers in the factory town taverns.

    Over 50 = The ache forever (5.00 / 1) (#15)
by BarnBabe on Thu Jun 18, 2009 at 09:49:51 AM EST
Didn't believe it when people would say a prior injury would ache when the weather changed. Sure enough, they were right. Tripped over the BarnDog and rammed my ring finger in the banister a while back. Yep, it became my new weather barometer.

I hope Hillary will not have to be putting her arm up in the air to test the wind velocity. Kidding, of course. I just wish her a speedy full recovery and no complications.

Yep, the anatomical barometer (none / 0) (#17)
by Cream City on Thu Jun 18, 2009 at 10:01:06 AM EST
that lets us know when a storm is coming.  I didn't believe it, either, but my dad's elbow often was more reliable than weather forecasts on teevee.

And now I have a few incipiently arthritic parts of the anatomy that predict weather changes, too.  (I also read that this ability in the elderly sometimes was used against them in witchcraft trials.  That will feed into the wingers' view of Clinton, too.:-)

    Nasty injury (5.00 / 2) (#30)

Fractured my left elbow rollerskating age 41 (24 years ago), had a great surgeon, best in the West, but it was pure hell regaining motion in rehab. Over 50 and right major arm (as in Hill's case) would have been horrendous. She won't be able to shake hands for a while, kinda major motion in her job. I hope she does well. I consider her a benevolent person and a fighter. Can't say the latter about her boss.

    Regardless, be strong, Hillz!

    Separated or dislocated? (none / 0) (#16)
by Anne on Thu Jun 18, 2009 at 09:56:51 AM EST
I dislocated the right shoulder in trying to keep from falling down the stairs - I slipped on cat barf on one of the steps - and in addition to all the ligaments that ripped and stretched and the labrum that tore, I also broke the rim of the socket, so had to have the shoulder surgically repaired.

Five years later...I fell when I stepped off a curb onto a storm drain I didn't see in the dark, and dislocated - and broke - the left shoulder.  Back into the operating room I went.  I was pretty embarrassed to see my surgeon, who initially thought when he saw me on the appointment list that I had re-injured the right shoulder.

Thankfully, it has been 4 years since the last one, and I am very careful to look where my feet are going; the shoulders are fine, and the only reminder I have of what were two painful incidents that required a lot of physical therapy, are the fading - tiny - scars from the repairs that were done arthroscopically.

At one point, I muttered to my kids that they might as well just put me in a wheelchair now, and my younger daughter's response was, "Nah - you'd probably just fall out of it and hurt yourself."

Heh, me too. Always thought it was a silly old people's fantasy, and I've always bounced back from every injury...Now the ankle that I sprained two years ago screams at me whenever the weather changes, and I feel totally decrepit.
