Red Carpet 2009 Thread

The Red Carpet is open at the Oscars. I think Miley Cyrus was the first to arrive. The male announcer at E! loved her dress, I didn't, it was too costume-y. His female counterpart called it "bold" but didn't sound crazy about it.The ABC folks didn't like it either.

The LA Times is live-blogging. At past awards shows, they've gotten the best pix up the fastest, we'll see if that continues.

I don't think the actual show will be that exciting -- too many of the nominees, like Slumdog Millionaire, seem certain. And Hugh Jackman as host? [Update: He was great.] For me, the Red Carpet is the main event. I'll be updating with thoughts and photos, hope you will join in. [Updates Below]

Update 5:00 pm (MT): The ABC show is not very good. It seems amateurish and too low key. The Randall Duke guy reminds me of Vincent Price and he's far too made up with a bad red dye job. E! is much better, unfortunately, it's not in HD here.

Update 5:10pm: ABC is getting lively. Mickey Rourke is wearing a white suit, he looks good --- for him. He's wearing a necklace with his dog's photo -- the dog died 6 days ago and they were together for 18 years. He lights a cigarette after he gets out of the limo. Ben Kingsley's wife is pretty in red.

The Slumdog kids look cute and the entire cast is ecstatic just to be here all together. I'm not knocked out by Heidi Klum's dress but the announcers are. (Photos to come as they become available.)

Diane Lane looks teriffic. I laughed just watching Seth Rogan and James Franco from Pineapple Express arrive, I guess I liked the movie more than I remembered.

Sara Jessica Parker looks like the fairy godmother in Cinderella but I like her anyway and the top half of the dress is cool. It's by Dior Haute Couture. She seems very happy.

Natlie Portman looks beautiful. Great dress, perfect fit. Robert Downey looks awake and healthy (in contrast to the Golden Globes.)

Update 5:45pm: Angelina Jolie: terrific. Beautiful dress and earrings. Philip Seymour Hoffman is wearing a stretchy cap on his head. Maybe his hotel didn't have a shower?

At first I thought Penelope Cruz should have stuck to black, but after a few different looks at her dress, I've changed my mind. I like the dress. She was great in Vicky Christina Barcelona, if you haven't seen it. Beyonce's dress is awful but her face looks great. Kate Winslett's dress doesn't move me and her hair is too old-fashioned. Meryl Streep's dress is a little drab.

Update: 6:26 pm: Marisa Tomei looked really happy when being interviewed, she has such a great smile. Her Versace dress had a little too much train. Sean Penn looks very sexy, great outfit.

Ok, pictures have been added, here's our new live-thread for the awards.

I'd like to watch "Slumdog", I'm hoping for an upset in Best Picture. Considering recent CA history and the "snub" of "Brokeback Mountain" for Best Picture in 2006, I'm hoping there's a chance "Milk" can win.

There's as much stylish support for civil rights tonight as there was yesterday at the Independent Spirit Awards. ;-)

I don't think Miley Cyrus's dress is so bad. It's fun to look at and kinda springy. The more I look at it the more I like it. Pretty girl, too. She looks very natural. I guess anyone would though after that Hollywood and Plastic Surgery show I watched last night. Good god.

    Nooo, not more House money (5.00 / 1) (#9)

or Senate money, for that matter, spent on silly gambles, please!  It's my money -- and yours -- and I'd rather look for a few sure things. :-)

    Winona's Oscar connections:

       1. Winona Ryder was named after this city, supposed the site of her conception
       2. The Big Sweater that the Big Lebowski wore was made at the Winona Knitting Mills. Dude!
       3. Former Winona State University journalism student Mark Steven Johnson supposedly based the Ann-Margret character in Grumpy Old Men on WSU theater professor Vivian Fusillo.

Anywho, having established my creds, here we go:

       1. Love me some Tim Gunn
       2. Angelina is stunning, no matter what else ya think.
       3. Miley Cyrus' dress looks like a bad cake.
       4. What, is ABC giving Robin Roberts all the people of color to interview? (she rocks anyway)

    But it's the only nominee I've seen. . . Langella is anyway a shoo-in.

Ben Kingsley's wife is pretty in red.

I thought they looked like a really odd pair.
