S.D. Argus Leader Endorses Hillary Clinton

The South Dakota Argus Leader has endorsed Hillary Clinton in the state's June 3 primary. Its reasons:

Clinton is the strongest Democratic candidate for South Dakota. Her mastery of complex policy detail is broad and deep, and her experience as a senator and former first lady matches that.

Measured against her opponent, Clinton is philosophically more moderate. That is likely a good thing for South Dakota.

....Clinton has demonstrated a real commitment to Native American issues and will have visited several South Dakota reservations before the race is over. Clinton is precisely correct when she says that people outside the region have a poor understanding of the troubling trends on our reservations. Federal attention could help. That includes but is not limited to higher-ranking posts in the federal bureaucracy.

Her truly universal health care plan would be welcomed by thousands of South Dakotans. Even on reservations, where health care is nominally universal already, such a plan would be welcome. The federal government would never be allowed to subject everyday Americans to the kind of care Native Americans living on reservations routinely receive.

....Her resilience and determination never should be questioned. She has met or overcome every challenge or roadblock in her way, and there have been many. Her determination to carry the nomination process through to its real conclusion has perhaps earned her a grudging respect from those who would never support her.

The paper acknowledges that at this point Hillary is a long-shot. But, it says:

[W]hatever some might say, the race is not over, and her name is on the ballot. Win or lose, she's also the best Democratic candidate for South Dakota.

filled with specifics. Obama may have knowledge of the issues, but that knowledge is neither as wide nor deep as hers. He just hasn't been around long enough.

Someone help me out: Isn't kind of weird to have a newspaper endorse the "other" candidate when the party has pretty much declared a winner?

is very good, according to many NA's I know here along the Great Lakes, where we still have many of the First People and Metis. Clinton, of course, came from the French Canadian and Metis culture, on her mother's side, which was so dominant here for centuries before the American takeover. And Clinton talked here about coming to Wisconsin for Girl Scout camp, where we got some basic exposure to NA culture (public schools now do more -- but her talks show me that she also has learned more on her own).

I got to watch some of her speech at Pine Ridge (very cool of her to wear Dakotah Sioux jewelry:-), which was very moving even beyond the symbolism of a presidential candidate coming to the site of the massacre at Wounded Knee. It brought back to me the story of the only survivor, an infant found days later, and her tragic story, too. If you haven't seen the SD PBS special on the beautiful Lost Bird, such a sad lens with which to see the aftermath of Wounded Knee and the continual revisions of NA policies, here it is.

Today I visited the elementary school classroom of a Latino boy I have tutored since kindergarten. He is now finishing 4th grade, which is the year each CA public school student must create a California mission and report. I am pleased to report that in his project he made it very clear the California native Americans were not willing participants in the CA missions. They were slaves who were not "free to leave."

Maybe that's a sop thrown to the cultural poison of "liberal" but they go on to say her universal health care is better. Her policies are more liberal than BO's--and that's why I support her

insensitivity of the newspaper's editorial board toward Hillary's solicitation of her opponent's murder CAN. NOT. STAND! (spittle). How DARE they! They are practically painting a TARGET on his forehead by ENDORSING this MURDEROUS cretin! (more spittle)
