Republican S.C. Debate - Live Thread

Is anyone watching the Republican debate on Fox News? It just started and Ron Paul is there. They started with the stories on the network news tonight that we are headed to a recession. They all deny it and talk about cutting spending.

Update: Papa Fred must have had a double Starbucks before the debate. He's actually somewhat lively and cracks a few one-liners (all things being relative, of course.)

Update: the highlight so far. Britt Hume asked the candidates whether the Navy commander in the Strait of Hormuz incident in the Persian Gulf made the right decision. McCain, Thompson, Giuliani answered in sync. Then Ron Paul went on the offensive, saying he was disturbed about what he was hearing and that hewould be much more cautious because the voice on the ship radio might not have been the enemy.

Britt Hume stopped him after a minute or so and asked him what he was talking about because the other candidates had praised the Navy commander for using caution. (Hume might have well have said "What planet are you on?)

Ron Paul pretended he couldn't hear Hume. When repeated, he said he couldn't hear the other candidates' answers. Is he deaf?

But even funnier, was Mitt Romney's poor political judgment. Hume went to Mitt next and instead of realizing that Paul had already been made to look like a fool, took a dig at Paul. The audience loudly booed him for doing so.

Huckabee takes a jab at Ron Paul and defends Israel. He says he has been there nine times. Paul responds sharply. Rudy chimes in about how he's been to Israel too and does some name-dropping about how various Israeli leaders are personal friends of his.

WE ARE VOTING FOR RON PAUL, HE STANDS FOR THE US CONSTUTTION ALL THE WAY, AND IS AN INDEPENDENT THINKER WHO LOVES THIS COUNTRY AND ONLY WANTS TO LIMIT GOVERNMENT NOT ENLARGE IT. HE HAS DEFENDED OUR FOUNDING FORE-FATHERS 30 YEARS AS CONGRESSMAN. HE HAS THE EXPERIENCE, KNOW HOW, COMPASSION, AND WANTS LIBERTY, JUSTICE AND FREEDOM FROM BIG GOV. IF YOU REALLY LISTEN,SOME OF THE OTHER CANDIDATES HAVE NOW TRIED TO USE HIS SLOGANS. WHAT HE HAS TO SAY IS FAR AHEAD OF HIS TIME. WHEN WE GO DOWN, THE WHOLE COUNTRY WILL REMEMBER RON PAUL. RON IS SQUEAKY CLEAN AND THEY HATE IT. HE'S NOT A POLITICIAN, HE'S A STATESMEN. HE'S A DOCTOR, NOT AN ATTORNEY. THE OTHERS HAVE BEEN BOUGHT OUT BY THE POWERS TO BE, 1-WORLDERS, INSIDERS, THE ELITIST. I THINK IT'S TIME FOR ALL AMERICANS TO WAKE UP TO WHAT'S REAL, TAKE THEIR HEADS OUT OF THE SAND & DEFEND THE CONSTITUTION AT ALL COSTS. RON PAUL IS OUR LAST CHANCE. SSD, CWD.

have the decency to take a basic english grammar class. if you don't know how to spell a word, look it up in a dictionary. you can get a decent paperback one for a dollar, at wal-mart.

fred thompson is one of the "un-dead", this explains why he appears more lively at night. of all the times i've been glad to not be a republican, this is the best time. were i a republican, i'd have to just slit my own throat, rather then be forced to vote for one of these guys.

the party of lincoln has truly reached its nadir.

From watching some one-on-one interviews with him, I think Ron Paul may actually be a bit hard of hearing...I think that is why he sometimes seems on a different wavelength in the debates.

WSWS on trait of Hormuz incident (none / 0) (#11)
by Andreas on Fri Jan 11, 2008 at 12:58:35 AM EST
    The WSWS writes today:

Five days after Sunday's encounter between US warships and Iranian boats in the Strait of Hormuz, details of what took place remain in dispute. What is clear, however, is that the US administration, at the very least, deliberately inflated the incident on the eve of President Bush's visit to the Middle East to menace Iran and raise the political temperature in the volatile region. ...

Over the past five days, holes have begun to appear in the initial Pentagon story. The US navy released a video of the Iranian speedboats spliced together with audio from the bridge of one of the ships. No mention was made of the white boxes and the key word "few" in the radio threat was indecipherable. The video, which has been widely broadcast, runs for only 4 minutes and 20 seconds and was thus an edited version of the 20-minute incident using audio from just one warship.

Commander Lydia Robertson, spokeswoman for the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, acknowledged yesterday that the navy could not be certain the radio message even came from one of the five Iranian boats. It may have come from another ship in the area or from shore, she said, adding: "We don't have a direct connection, but it's not necessarily a disconnect." Another aspect of the "threat" is also odd--there is no background noise as one would expect in a broadcast from a small high-speed boat. ...

For the Bush administration, the incident in the Strait of Hormuz could not have been better timed to stymie the development of diplomatic relations with Iran, to heighten tensions in the region and possibly to justify a further US military buildup against Tehran. It cannot be ruled out that the US, which has a long history of engineering provocations, concocted this latest naval encounter to meet these political purposes.
