My picks, and reasons (none / 0) (#1)
by scribe on Sun Feb 25, 2007 at 07:02:08 AM EST
    ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE
Forest Whitaker (villains are the best roles)
Peter O'Toole  (Sentimental favorite and They Owe Him One For His Career)

ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE Eddie Murphy - Dreamgirls (regardless of how Seriously Bad his other stuff has been, he puts serious numbers of butts in seats - which is why he's still making movies - and he pulls ahead to win on that alone)

    ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE
Helen Mirren (channels QE2 the way Blanchett channeled Hepburn in "Aviator", capstone on a great career)
Penélope Cruz (slips in the Academy splits 3 ways among Judy, Helen and Meryl; she's done so much good work, it shouldn't be characterized as "slipping in", but she hasn't been around long enough to win on Strength of Career like O'Toole might, above.)

    ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Jennifer Hudson - Dreamgirls (the Cuba Gooding, Jr. Rookie of The Year award)

ANIMATED FEATURE FILM- Happy Feet (everyone loves penguins)

ART DIRECTION- Dreamgirls (everyone loves musicals pulled off well, viz. "Chicago")

CINEMATOGRAPHY - Children of Men (the extended un-edited chase scene does it, like going through the kitchen at the Copa in "Goodfellas")

    COSTUME DESIGN -ehhh, pick em.

    DIRECTING
    The Departed (It's Marty's time)
Letters from Iwo Jima (the spite-Marty vote)

    DOCUMENTARY FEATURE
    An Inconvenient Truth
    Jesus Camp (close runner-up)

    DOCUMENTARY SHORT - no idea

FILM EDITING - Children of Men (see cinematography, above)

    FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
The Lives of Others (one which you really should see - deals with living under the Stasi and the culture of informers where half the society were state-informers)

MAKEUP - no idea, but not Mel.  Pick Pan....

    MUSIC (SCORE) - no idea.

    MUSIC (SONG) -anything from Dreamgirls

    BEST PICTURE - ehhh
The Departed (They'll justify this by saying "it's for Jack, not Marty", thus sustaining my "2 for Clint, for every one for Marty" rule below)

SHORT FILM (ANIMATED) The Little Matchgirl (no idea, so, everyone loves a classic)

SHORT FILM (LIVE ACTION) - West Bank Story (no idea, so, pick one)

SOUND EDITING - Letters from Iwo Jima (one for Clint)

SOUND MIXING - Dreamgirls (everyone loves musicals)

VISUAL EFFECTS - Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (they made gobs of money, so they get one, too)

WRITING (ADAPTED SCREENPLAY) - Children of Men (a nice anti-admin and anti-anti-feminist slap)

WRITING (ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY) -Letters from Iwo Jima (for every one Marty gets, Clint gets two)

Is the best new picture I have seen in a while.

    Isnt it (none / 0) (#3)

true that Whitaker wasn't even nominated for Bird some years back and that Titanic won best picture?

Just two reasons why these awards dont mean squat beyond a boost in box office.
