R.I.P. Darent Williams

Denver Bronco cornerback Darrent Williams was gunned down at 2:00 a.m. last night in a drive-by shooting at 10th/11th Ave. and Speer Blvd. in Denver.

The Fort Worth, Texas native, according to team officials, was shot in what police had informed the team was a drive-by shooting. Williams was in a Humvee limousine with several others when it was hit with several bullets fired from another vehicle shortly after 2 a.m. Monday morning. Williams was one of three people in the limousine who were shot. All three, including Williams, were taken to hospitals.

The execution-style murder may have resulted from an altercation at a nightclub earlier in the evening. Another Bronco player may have been in the vehicle. As of this writing, no one has been arrested but suspects have been identified.

Colorado law mandates life without parole for first degree murder. Why don’t people think about consequences before they act? Whoever killed Williams will have decades in a maximum security prison to ponder consequences soon enough. He just threw his life away.

Williams was 24 years old. He leaves behind two young children in Texas. He was too young to die.

Update: Denver police have released this information, according to 9news.com.

Williams was killed in an early morning shooting after someone with a gun pulled up alongside the white Hummer stretch limousine he and wide receiver Javon Walker were riding in and fired multiple shots.

Police say 16 people were in the stretched Hummer at the time of the shooting, including Williams and Walker. Authorities say Walker was not shot.

....Authorities say they are searching for a white GM model car, either a Suburban or a Tahoe with dark tinted windows. Anyone with any information regarding the incident should call Denver Police.

It's not clear the nightclub incident was a factor in the shooting. Darrent's group had been at Club Safari earlier in the evening. But now police say the argument occurred at a bar near 10th Avenue and Broadway, which makes more sense since it's so close to where the shooting occurred. Police are also investigating other motives.

Update: A moving past interview with Darrent is here. As for his children:

I have two kids. A son, Darius. He's 7. And a daughter, Jaelyn. She's 4. They live with their mom in Texas. I have a good relationship with their mom. We're not together by any means, but we don't give each other a headache like I hear some of my teammates talk about. I feel like I've got a better deal than a lot of people.

I just returned from Denver last night and was in proximity to the area of the shooting - makes me shutter to read this...makes me shutter to have my 3 ounce liquids and quartsize baggies placed under close, careful scrutiny at DIA -  yet have the National Rifle Association pressure lawmakers to ignore this and other gun related violence.

...for victims of violent crime day?"

Aside from the utter asininity of the gun comment above, this man was the victim of someone bearing a gun under suspicious circumstances, i.e., loaded, in a vehicle, possibly intoxicated, and certainly of vile temperament without regard for human life.

Let's hope that the attacker is found, prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, and put away for life.

The sheer numbers of guns and gun crimes diminishes the quality of life for all of us through incidents such as this.

and the sports blogs are going in two directions at once:  mourning and shock, and gratuitous [whatever].
Here, from Deadspin.com, is one of their updates.  And, showing that apparently Williams died close to his teammate Javon Walker, is a post showing Javon Walker wearing a bloodstained shirt.
