In New York City this weekend:

Morgan Gliedman, 27, and her 31-year-old boyfriend, Aaron Greene, were arrested on weapons-possession charges Saturday after officers with a search warrant discovered a plastic container with 7 grams of HMTD, a highly explosive white powder used in bomb making, police and prosecutors said.

Also found in the living room were numerous written items containing instructions on the manufacture of explosive materials and bombs, including a collection of pages that had a cover page entitled "The Terrorist Encyclopedia," court papers said.

Greene was ordered held without bond. Ms. Gliedman is 9 months pregnant and will have a court appearance today. Police got the search warrant because she was being investigated for credit card theft. She grew up on Park Avenue, attended Dalton, and her father, a doctor, is the director of radiation oncology at Beth Israel Hospital, Brooklyn Division. Her boyfriend, Aaron Greene, is a Harvard graduate and attended graduate school at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. He is an Occupy Wall St. activist. Adam Lanza's remains were claimed by his father, Peter Lanza. A family spokesman says a private service was held over the weekend. There are no details as to where the remains were placed.

On December 20, 2012, Nancy Lanza's family in New Hampshire held a small service for her at her brother's home in Kingston, N.H. Kingston Police Chief Donald Briggs said she was cremated and would be buried at a later date.

Her obituary appeared in the Eagle Tribune and Union Leader on December 23. The family intends a public memorial for her next year. [More...]

Like everyone else, I have pondering what may have precipitated Adam Lanza's killing spree in Newtown. While most people assume he had a mental illness, we don't know that he did. (Asperger's is not a mental illness but a neurological disorder that is not associated with violent acts.) If he had a mental disorder, what might it have been? And which mental disorders, if any, are associated with higher risk of violence?

I haven't come to any conclusions, but after reading dozens or more articles in medical, psychiatric, and psychological journals, here are a few that at least increased my understanding of the topic and dispelled some myths: [More...]

A judge in Connecticut today extended the time period 5 search warrants executed on the Lanza's home and cars will remain sealed. There were three search warrants for the house and two for cars.

[One was] for the 2010 Honda Civic Adam Lanza drove to the school and [the other was] for Nancy Lanza's 2009 silver BMW, which was parked in the garage attached to the home.

Why keep the search warrants sealed if no one is under criminal investigation? [More...]

Jennifer Huettner was Adam Lanza's teacher for the 9th and 10th and 11th grades. He left without graduating to take college classes. He got his GED from the college.

She says he was home-schooled for the 7th and 8th grades. In the 9th grade, he returned to school and was in a portable classroom by himself. He had Asperger's.

“He didn’t want to be around people,” Jennifer explains. “Our goal was to get him back in the building.”

Adam’s mother Nancy would drop him off, then sit in the next room while Jennifer worked with him.“He was very OCD. He’d clean the desk with Purell,” Jennifer remembers.

He displayed no signs of violence. He never had a tantrum. He was not bullied. In the 10th grade he was in the main building. [More...]

The Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals dealt a serious blow to the civil lawsuit of the falsely accused Duke La Crosse players. The players had sued various governmental entities and two police detectives, Officers Mark Gottlieb and Benjamin Himan.

The three-judge panel rejected their claims for damages filed under federal law against the City of Durham and its police department.

The panel allowed the former players to continue with their claims under North Carolina law that Durham officials violated their state constitutional rights. The panel also allowed the three wrongfully accused players to proceed with their state claims that two police investigators – Mark Gottlieb and Benjamin Himan – engaged in malicious prosecution.

The players previously settled a lawsuit against Duke University for an undisclosed sum. Where is Crystal Gail Mangum? In jail, awaiting trial on a murder charge. In October, she received permission to represent herself at trial.

Cameron Douglas, the son of actor Michael Douglas, was badly beaten in prison, after a mobster put out a bounty on him for being a snitch. He suffered a broken femur, among other injuries, and to make matters worse, according to an unnamed source, prison doctors misdiagnosed his the break as a sprain. He then developed a blood clot, and is still on crutches, two months later.

Douglas is incarcerated at the FCi in Loretto, Pennsylvania, a low level security facility. [More...]

Bob Geldorf's inspiration for the Boomtown Rats 1979 hit song "I Don't Like Mondays" was Brenda Spencer, who that year fired 30 rounds from a window inside her San Diego home at the Grover Cleveland elementary school across the street, killing a principal and custodian and wounding 8 students. Spencer was 16. She had received the rifle from her father as a Christmas gift

When asked why she committed the shooting Spencer replied, "I just did it for the fun of it. I don't like Mondays. This livens up the day. I have to go now. ....She also said, "I had no reason for it, and it was just a lot of fun," "It was just like shooting ducks in a pond,"' and, "[The children] looked like a herd of cows standing around; it was really easy pickings."

We are in a state of disbelief and trying to find whatever answers we can. We too are asking why. We have cooperated fully with law enforcement and will continue to do so. Like so many of you, we are saddened, but struggling to make sense of what has transpired."

Update: Adam Lanza's father does not live in N.J. as previously reported by the news, but in Stamford, CT. Peter Lanza is remarried and a tax specialist and VP at GE Energy Financial Services. He is also an adjunct professor at Northeastern University in Boston. Adam's uncle, James Champion, the brother of Nancy Lanza, is a police officer in New Hamphsire where they grew up, and where the Lanza family lived until 1998. Adam's grandmother, Dorothy Champion Hanson, 78, lives in Florida.

Update: 7:37 ET : ABC has a photo of Adam Lanza when he was 13. This photo is all over the internet, and looks to be a more recent one, if it's the same person (Added: It's not, it's a photo of Ryan in 2007 from his Facebook page.)
